So after changing the oil n filter in my disco I believe the forward drive pack has let go

I'm looking at replacement used boxes

My question is do any of the gearbox vin plate numbers (matter at all?) or have to be the same as my current box or will any td5 automatic gearbox work when fitted to another automatic td5?

Any help much appreciated

I just wondered as on Ashcroft site they ask for the numbers on the vin plate

Cheers for the reply

Ashcroft can rebuild your own box for you if you like and want to keep it original?

I think they even offer an upgraded ZF4hp22EH for the tweaked Td5 motors?

I keep pointing towards recon boxes as I've been there before with a BMW auto and fitted the "drives brilliant" "was perfect when removed" second hand box only to find I had bought a duffer that lasted weeks  It's hard enough to change them out in the first place but having to go straight back in there so soon is a right pain in the hole and that's not taking into account the cost of hire cars an then having my own gearbox rebuilt :(

I'm not saying they're all duffers out there from Del boy an Rodders but I'd hate to see you have to do it twice and paying out twice.

Thanks for the reply this is my worry with no warranty on most second hand boxes it's a gamble

But double the price from Ashcroft will hav to scratch the head n have a think

might be a case of buy cheap buy twice but it's a gamble you take unless you know the vehicle and know the gearbox..

has it been run dry, is the clutch about to **** itself and has 10 miles less, has some moron filled it with the incorrect oil and run it hot? has it been used to tow massive loads up killer hills constantly being tasked?

at least with a rebuilt trans from someone like ashcroft you get the piece of mind of the guarantee

its wise to check colour of what oil was in a used box, looking t drain plug will tell you that, most breakers offer a small warranty
