Hi. I am a vehicle Mechanic in the British Army. I have been working on a Landrover Wold for the past couple of days. The landrover will not go above 50. The original fault was lacking power and the turbo had alot of freeplay so i changed the turbo. There was metal flakes coming out of the exhaust and there was black smoke. The black smoke has now gone after cleaning out the intercooler. All that is left to do now ( i think) is compression test the engine. Does anyone have any ideas or help? Thankyou

metal flakes are not good, a compression and injector test would be a start.

No wonder we lost the empire, god only knows how things run in a battle zone

should I offer to send mine over to use, might pop a manual in the parcel as well

Haha no. Ive just never had a problem like this before. Well i have buut never gine so far in depth, our fault diagnosis books are rubbish so what better way to come on here. Compression testing tomorrow.

Sounds like they would do better, knowing the MOD they'd just bin it and get a new one!

Okay does in run evenly, can you here any slight chuffing noise from exhaust? I'm wondering if you have a split or burnt valve as lumps of metal do not just appear in exhaust unless it is rust from standing around.

Typical b mech, go find an A mech to explain how it all works. You should be ashamed of yourself for posting on here

Kind of noise but more noise from the engine almost as if the timing is out. I had the rocker cover of today and noticed some scratches on the inside just behind were the push rods are. Readjusted the tappets today. The metal was almost glitter like substance. We have changed intercoolers so i know its nothing to do with that. Its a diesel btw.

sounds like you want to pull it apart, metal shavings are a sign of something more serious occuring

Right all ive come on here for is advice and its not exactly the end of the world to ask a question. Just because you think your some Landrover veteran guru, you do not have to twining away on a forum that is.... oh ye for asking questions. So if you have nothing constructive to say then dont say anything at all.

You're on a fast track to alienating yourself.

Walk back outside, pull on your rhino skin coat and then come back in again.;)

could be a blocked particulate filter if it has one. Has the fuel pump been retarded? Has the fuel sedimenter been emptied?
Ye, all of this has been done. going to compression test tomorrow as originally planned was just asking for ideas or knowledge. Thankyou
