I think its glycol contamination through the oil cooler that killed the tq , from research mercs and jags suffer from this as well.

Without sounding like a noob, if I wanted a 7 seater I should have got a 110 or a landcruiser.

Will do, hopefully box is ok , but recon tq, oil and sump pan is £750, going to put separate oil cooler on when done to stop it happening again.
If gearbox is ruined then its all over.
If I had the money Id chuck all the rover running gear and stick a v8 duramax in it and some dana 60s :D

Why do you think it's the TQ. usually when they get coolant in the box which isn't very common, they make a cyclic grinding noise or start with harsh shifts and bumping when pulling up.

What do you want it for ?
Ours is a brilliant workhorse, you won't find a better vehicle for towing fact.
But we've replaced both bottom wishbone bushes, rear anti roll bar bushes, front wheel bearings, brake servo, and the flywheel damper is on its way out, aswell as the usual park brake problems ( sorted now we adjust it regularly)
It's a pain sometimes but it's a brilliant vehicle, comfortable fast and I can get 30 mpg and has massive load area just be wary of the faults

Jesus what's the mileage on it ???

I've had a manual Discovery 3 since 2007, after owning a disastrous Discovery 2. and its just done 106,000 miles. I had problems with the dual mass flywheel which was sorted by fitting a new one and a new clutch whilst the gearbox was off at 103,000 miles. I had the belts changed at the same time ,as recommended at 105,000 miles, which was a bit expensive but I expect to keep the car another couple of years at least.

Handbrake was an issue but was resolved with new parts and I've had a couple of failures with electric windows where the loom got frayed. A problem with the air bag warning light was a fault in the wiring loom in the drivers seat and I've had a new alternator. I bought it with 17,000 miles on the clock and in the intervening 89,000 miles I've had 2 x new sets of tyres and 2 x new discs and pads.

I do a lot of motorway mileage with work and regularly get 32-33 mpg. Its the most comfortable car I've ever owned is a pleasure to drive. I recently did a 1,100 mile round trip to N Uist with 4 mates in the car and regularly do the 5 hour trip from Cheshire to Cornwall without needing to stop. If you get a good one they're cracking vehicles and a tad more refined than my old Defender.

pulsing when driving at 50mph or up hill and shudder when accelerating

You should try a double flush the fluid is Castrol BOT 338 or shell ATF M 1375.4. and very expensive from a main dealer !!!
The engineers at ZF tell me that Glycol damages the clutch packs and the box may need a rebuild, the shuddering is the clutches slipping.

Can't you take the motor back to the seller and ask for a refund ? if not I hope the flush fixes it. Also I have heard of folks putting in a anti-slip additive with good results but haven't tried it myself, we just fit new boxes.

The D1 has more load space than the D3!! But, I do love my D3.

In a LR mag. shoot out between Disco anna Defender, er, the Disco won, quite easily:jaw:.Could it be the Defender replacement will be a Disco??

There's a guy in my local who works for Land Rover, heard him talking the other day to a bloke saying they were stopping producing the Disco - i think the plan being that the new Defender will be more like a disco anyway, the F3 will be bigger and the R/R is there for the posh twits.

hope it's not the case though, I like the Disco range (excluding the D2)

Cambelt change - there are 2 of them - hilarious - one at the front - 3 hours - little one at the back - lift body - 8 hours.

Supposed to be done at 105000 miles.............................................................

Good luck!

You don't have to take the engine out or lift the body, you can do it all in situe. It is a bit of a bugger of a job, but, not a 8 hour job that's for sure!

Sounds like Pressbrake didn't get off to a great start... so far, my D3 hasn't caused any major problems, but, it will be getting a very deep service before Morocco.

Thanks for your reply, which has had me doing the google thing.
From what I can make out a yank aditive called dr tranny(is that dr evils mardi gras name:p) does the trick.

Im going to pull the box out next week and have a look as its going to have to work for a living and I want to do what I can to make it drama free and while Im at it fit a bmw x5 sump to the box so it can be serviced properly.

Loving the disco today 3 hours towing each way with 3.5 tonne on and is pulling beautifully lovely place to be too, shame about all the other ****ers on the road tonight :/ 2 more hours to go !
