Are all Land Rovers rubbish?

well, discovery would be a good idea, but td5 means electrics are involved and these wont be as reliable (or easy to fix by yourself) as the earlier 300tdi. someone said the only reliable landys are ones built before 1994. i would be inclined to agree, cept move the date to 1998 and have an exception in the freelander.

if you want a landy, look at the 200 or 300 tdi engined motors. defenders are great, and if you can deal with a bit of road noise, poor handling and not much speed they are great. i used my modified 110 as my primary road vehicle for a good year (i now have a 3.5 V8 rangey classic, another motor to look into)

if you want more comfort and silence than you would get in a defender, but still want an iconic shape, look into the range rover classic. i think they look awesome, they are great on motorways, exceptionally comfortable whatever model you choose (the late SE models were the best, with full leather, some had heated seats, air con, heated screens, lumbar support - luxury even these days and supremely comfy and quiet) - i have a 1989 vogue which was not the most luxurious but even so the seats are like sofas, it has air con, a 6 cd changer, and is very quiet on the road. and coz it has a v8 it goes like **** off a stick. downside is running costs, but you can get an LPG converted range rover, which makes you run a sweet engine on what is currently 51p a mile round here. they were made in diesel though, and if you are game for spending 3 grand you can get yourself a mint condition one. all for one of the most iconic off roaders, one with alot of ability off road, and the original SUV that sparked all the rest.

then of course, if you dont fancy the rangey or defender, go for a disco. they are alright as well, pretty comfy, very good off road and all that faff, but not my preferance, i like the defender and rangey far more!

what i would suggest, as others have, is perhaps your entrance wasnt the greatest, and you do seem to have raised a few hackles. possibly a bad move on your part, because my suggestion to you would be if you do want to buy a landy take someone with you that knows something about em to check over your motor before you buy, because it is very easy indeed to pick up a duff one, with a chassis that is falling to bits, a bulkhead on the brink, etc etc.

it may also be worth putting your location in your details, so people know where you are.

good luck

Legend.

I'll do some hunting and see what earlier discoverys I can uncover in Scotland.

I never reallly thought about a Range Rover as I don't think I'm posh enough and, as you say, they burn fuel although LPG would be good idea....

Defo gonna do some hunting and some more homework!

Thanks for your help people. :D

if you get a rangey, makes sure its a classic not the generation 2 p38 - they are the other pre 98 exception - they are horrifically unreliable.

you can get a 300tdi rangey, so you have the fuel consumption of a diesel, the look and comfort of a rangey, and all the other bonuses also.

but a V8 does sound nice!

here are mine

awesome looking things

and this was my daily driver - my GF lives in wales, so this took me from london to wales almost every weekend. sure they arent quite as comfy, fast or refined, or quiet as a rangey or disco, but if you dont mind turning up the music and taking a little longer they are fine, in fact they are awesome. needless to say with roof rack and those tyres it wasnt the fastest thing on the motorway - it was good for 70 but you didnt really want to push that, i stuck to 60 tops! but a great laugh wherever you take it!

:doh::eek:

My apologies to all I may have inadvertently insulted with my lack of forum etiquette. I had no idea an introduction was necessary although it seems polite and sensible now I'm prompted to think about it.

There is no question that Land Rovers are the best in the world when it comes to the rough stuff but I need one that can do a bit of everything and be reliable at the same time.

Perhaps my question should have been: Which Land Rover is the most reliable all rounder?

LOL, fair do's ...;)

Discovery 300 Tdi .. same as mine ... Good on and offroad, getting long in the tooth now, but a good one will still be reasonably cheap.

Have fun ... ;)

OKay, I think I've taken all on board adn so, in no particular order, my short list goes something like this:
200/300tdi Range Rover classic
200/300tdi Discovery
Any Defender that looks like Carpy's!

And the bad news is there aint many dezul classics out there

My 90 is a 1995 (M) 300tdi, how do I know if it has all these lekky bits?

na shes a fresh 300(best one to own you luckey begger) so i very much doubt it has many lecy parts, my 300disco is a95 plate and has zero :D its about 97 98 i think they started to bring out lecy parts but there only basic leccy parts compared to a td5 etc

mine is even earlier - 1994 300tdi :D

Nothing wrong with Freelanders - you ask Doobreydawg and Howardo - good bits of kit, let down by poor servicing and maintenance by the owners.

Well theres nothing wrong with my freelander (touch wood).
I think its best to buy the most basic landy you can live with it you want fewer problems.
