Are all Land Rovers rubbish?

I would like another Land Rover but am I right in saying that people who've had a freelander hate them and those that have them feel like they should like them (and even refuse to say so till after dark)?

If so, I'll stay away and try and a Discovery. Do less people hate these?

I should probably take my mechanics advice and get a Japanese 4X4 but I like Land Rovers and want to give them another chance.

buy a Mitsubishi "****er"

slope. are you trying to get shot?

Nope and nor did I mean insult meant to anyone who has an attachment, concerning or not, to a Land Rover.

I'm just trying to get some good advice in the hope of avoiding thowing more money away on a vehicle that breaks constantly.

So far it seems that the freelander was the wrong one to go for so its getting repaired and sold (Bonus - I've managed to find a used transfer box for £275).

Got my eye on a 2001 Discovery TD5..........

P.S. Foss / Fanatic - WTF?

They're hinting at (heh) what I said in my first reply .. if you think all Landrovers are rubbish then buy a slitty.

What sort of response do you expect from a forum that loves Land Rovers? Open, welcoming, helpful arms? If you do you might choose your entrance somewhat differently. You get peoples backs up without even introducing yourself and then wonder why they're calling you names and suggesting you go away to slitty land? Then you say you didn't mean to insult anyone ...

Like I said first, I still call Troll .. even if you buy a Defender ...

Golf GTI - Golf formel E - Nova - Corsa - Corsa 16v - Cavalier - BMW 318 TDS

aside from the Golf formel E and the Nova the rest were total ****e. BMW was a pain in the arse!

Now a defender 90 TD5 - and each day is just waking up to heaven, Sooooo wouldnt have anything else.

:doh::eek:

My apologies to all I may have inadvertently insulted with my lack of forum etiquette. I had no idea an introduction was necessary although it seems polite and sensible now I'm prompted to think about it.

I like Land Rovers which is the reason i'm here. If I didn't then I would simply go and buy a slitty (I don't know what that is - see, I am new to this) The main experience I have had is with a freelander which is looking like it may absorb its own value in cash in a short while although I have great memories of the family lwb Defender.

There is no question that Land Rovers are the best in the world when it comes to the rough stuff but I need one that can do a bit of everything and be reliable at the same time.

Perhaps my question should have been: Which Land Rover is the most reliable all rounder?

Discovery.
People will tell you defender, but they are shocking to sit in on a motorway all day, sound look n feel like a tractor and youll never pull any birds in one.

Cheers, I think I'll go for a Discovery as I've lots of motorway miles to do. It would be cool to have a Defender.......wish I could afford two!!

That would be your best option as they soak up the miles and are more refined/comfortable to drive than a Defender on tarmac.

Hear, hear ... but a Disco in the right hand's is still a very capable machine, probably only bettered by a Defender 90 off road.

well, discovery would be a good idea, but td5 means electrics are involved and these wont be as reliable (or easy to fix by yourself) as the earlier 300tdi. someone said the only reliable landys are ones built before 1994. i would be inclined to agree, cept move the date to 1998 and have an exception in the freelander.

if you want a landy, look at the 200 or 300 tdi engined motors. defenders are great, and if you can deal with a bit of road noise, poor handling and not much speed they are great. i used my modified 110 as my primary road vehicle for a good year (i now have a 3.5 V8 rangey classic, another motor to look into)

if you want more comfort and silence than you would get in a defender, but still want an iconic shape, look into the range rover classic. i think they look awesome, they are great on motorways, exceptionally comfortable whatever model you choose (the late SE models were the best, with full leather, some had heated seats, air con, heated screens, lumbar support - luxury even these days and supremely comfy and quiet) - i have a 1989 vogue which was not the most luxurious but even so the seats are like sofas, it has air con, a 6 cd changer, and is very quiet on the road. and coz it has a v8 it goes like **** off a stick. downside is running costs, but you can get an LPG converted range rover, which makes you run a sweet engine on what is currently 51p a mile round here. they were made in diesel though, and if you are game for spending 3 grand you can get yourself a mint condition one. all for one of the most iconic off roaders, one with alot of ability off road, and the original SUV that sparked all the rest.

then of course, if you dont fancy the rangey or defender, go for a disco. they are alright as well, pretty comfy, very good off road and all that faff, but not my preferance, i like the defender and rangey far more!

what i would suggest, as others have, is perhaps your entrance wasnt the greatest, and you do seem to have raised a few hackles. possibly a bad move on your part, because my suggestion to you would be if you do want to buy a landy take someone with you that knows something about em to check over your motor before you buy, because it is very easy indeed to pick up a duff one, with a chassis that is falling to bits, a bulkhead on the brink, etc etc.

it may also be worth putting your location in your details, so people know where you are.

good luck
