Anything I should be aware of ..... Hose change&EGR mod

I used oven cleaner- the foaming type. Didn't do much.

I tried over night soaked in dishwasher cleaner powder and water. Helped, but still lots left.

Petrol soak. That did it.. petrol and bottle brushes. The remaining oil/petrol mix can be saved for when you torch the Freelander on forum advice later on, or great for fire starting as long as you're very bloody careful. I mixed mine with a load of old waste veg oil and poured in my oil drum burner full of dense garden waste and it burned quite safely with no explosive effects as there were bugger all fumes as it was so cold. Still used a VERY long lit taper/wick though.. ;)

I did mine today. Someone had already changed the bolts that chaff into the hoses so I was pleased I didn't have to do that!
The EGR valve came out easily & the blanked off replacement fitted but the bolt holes were a little tight. I fitted the exhaust pipe first then used a screwdriver to line up the 4 bolt holes and gradually tightened them up. Noticeable difference in how it runs, more torque low down & pick-up seems quicker.

Did you clean the manifold and ports out guys? I am not in a position to have the car in bits for more then 2-3 hours. I am banking on the G101 doing a good job on the manifold!!

No, I didn't think my ports were that bad and you can only access a small part of it so I didn't bother. Thought about using a hoover while scraping to suck any crap out, but coudn't be bothered in the end. I can whip off the manifold etc in about 5 mins now. Dead easy. Hardest part was getting a good seal on the exhaust part of the EGR bypass. When I get the bashplate off I'll see if the other end of the exhaust pipe can be removed and blanked instead.

Mine runs absolutely lovely now after new recon injectors all round and MAF, Ronbox, EGR bypass and clean out. Not fitted my red silly pipes yet, but will do if it ever stops raining.

I have a feeling mine needs injectors and a MAF next but I have spent a small fortune in the last 2 weeks so they will have to wait till after Christmas!! Or perhaps Santa (the Mrs) will bring me a MAF and 4 shiny new injectors!!!!

When you do the injectors it is vital to cut the seats properly to get a proper seal. I wrote about it in my thread about my freelander fun when I did it. The proper tool is only about £15 on ebay IIRC.

I am thinking that replacing injectors might be beyond my abilities to be honest :(

I will probably just give it to a garage but will be sure to mention the seat cutting.

I found the hose in question was a bit thinner and clears the screw head !

Them looks pretty they does! Cleanest engine bay Ive ever seen! :D

Noob question time, is there actually any point to changing hoses over to colored silicone ones like that, or is it just for aesthetics?

Also, is the egr mod worth doing on the petrol models too? What does it actually do to the car? I did it to my last car because the boy racer group I was in said to do it :D but never really asked why... but I found a coke can, some instant gasket blue goo and 2 long bolts made a great EGR blanking plate!

Hi I have heard silicone hoses don't degrade like normal ones so now mine are ready for a change I thought I would make sure they never need doing again due to degradation.

All reports on EGR blanking are good..... Smoother running, better MPG, more power.....that's on Diesels I have read about can't be sure for petrols but couldn't see why results wouldn't be similar.

Thanks , my original hoses were porous , on 55 k ish , colour was a secondary choice :D as for the egr , which passes exhaust gasses back into the intake system , and when the soot is mixed with oil vapour there present , starts to clog the intake system up big style , don't know how it would effect the mot on a petrol motor if it had the blanking mod , as for my td4 its been one of the best mods ive done :)

Well I did it on a petrol astra. It failed the mot miserably on emissions but I think that was an unrelated matter, garage said the engine was burnig oil and the gunk oil that didn't get burned passed through the exhaust system and gummed up the catalytic converter and lambda sensor, so every year for the mot I had to spend £400 on a new cat and lambda. Had enough of that after 2 years!

Ill give it a go on mine and see if there's any difference. Not like the fuel consumption can get any worse!

Anyone got a piccie of where I can expect to find the egr? Are they in pretty much the same place on each freelander? Or will it be somewhere obscure on the petrol model :p

Have a look at my other thread...... "Note's to self"

Haha looks like someone had fun!:D

By the looks of that, looks like it might be front, passenger side of the engine? Ill have a lookeypokey in the morning and see how much I cock it up! (it seems with me, anything I do that I think "will only be a 5 minute job" usually turns into a 3 day job, that once youve started you cant stop because the car is ####ed otherwise, and almost always starts torrential rain the second something goes wrong! )

This IS a 5 minute job just to remove the EGR and replace with the bypass. easiest to undo 2 jubilee clips and 4 allen key bolts. Well maybe 10 minutes, but it is easy.

I Concur, However if you decide to clean the Manifold out add another couple of hours!!!!!!:nothingtoadd:

Do you really NEED to buy a blanking or bypass kit (is there a difference between the two things, or different name for the same thing)? Ive seen some people use specially made ones that look like false EGRs that are just a hollow bit of metal or something. When I did it to my last car I just flattened a coke can into a sheet of metal, cut it to shape and gummed it on with some instant gasket and big EGR retaining bolts! :D Worked a treat... cant see any reason why I cant do that again, but I dont wanna risk cocking up anything on me landy engine, dunno if its a different system to the Vauxhall engine. It also made the engine warning light come on whenever you went about 60, whoops.

The ones that look similar to EGR valves block off the exhaust pipe fitting so you don't get exhaust fumes released into your engine bay which I'm sure would be an MOT failure.

I wasn't prepared to take the risk cocking it up myself, the way I see it is the manufactured ones have been tried and tested.

I paid £25 for mine and it has worked a treat. No flaffing about with coke cans, The prong is welded there ready for the vacuum hose to be blanked off, the exhaust blank is there (I have heard of people using 2p pieces for this).. All just seems a bit temporary!! Yeah fine if you are on a Top Gear challenge in Outer Mongolia and you have to make do and mend.....In my eyes £25 gives me a permanent well manufactured finish that I can trust will keep the car going up and down the country with a caravan in tow.....money well spent!!
