On the way home yesterday the power steering failed, leaving a nice puddle. Anyone want to guess what has happened?

Unless it's obvious where the leak is coming from then you need to clean up the pipework first, to try and spot the leak. If it's a hose / pipe leak then quite a good way is to get it on full lock (max pressure) and use a piece of white A4 paper to locate what will probably be a jet of ATF fluid shooting out. The leak may be miniscule. Those hoses are not cheap, but not as bad as the steering box... I am currently plucking up the courage to do the seal at the bottom of the steering box on my "new" RR. But on my last I lost the PAS due to a shredded reservoir and torn high pressure hose, and replaced the gear cooler a couple of years prior due to a leak in the matrix.

My guess is....

The pipes have rubbed against the chassis rail where they turn up towards the steering box, and holed.

I replaced mine last year... one was reasonably priced, the other was off the scale. Better to go to a hydraulic pipe fabricator and have them make one up if you need it.

Will I win a prize?

You get a go on his private off-roading course out near Ellesborough.
