Anyone carried out a side exit exhaust conversion?

As title,

want to shift me exhaust because:

a) i may want to fit a rear tank in the near future
b) it looks rad

anybody done it?

I know i need to remove both silencers and alot of pipe, was going to initially use flexi exhaust hose stuff and jubilee clips with a finisher exiting between the passenger door and rear wheel arch. the line looks clear of obstructions so its a question of where to put mounts and is that flexi stuff ok? was also thinking of fitting a smaller silencer/box in, poss a 16" cherry bomb or something. dont know much about these can anyone recommend anything else?

If the flexi will wear out or wont pass MOT i will get a solid one made up to the same shape as the flexi one i know its all ok.

any advice?

I've bin thinking of doing this but having it exiting behind the wheel arch, should be quite easy just by cutting an shutting the last bit of pipe, taking it over the chassis rail instead of under it, an you get to keep yer middle box just in case it is an MOT point. I've seen a few done both ways an so far they've all bin dogs dinners. One was on a vehicle on display at Driff show last year an they'd used wot looked like scaffold poles cut at 45degrees an welded together, wot a heap of ****e an they were proud of it.

series landies came with rear fill tanks and rear exit eggzausts so why not just copy one of them

I'd thought of moving the number plate an light over to the right hand side an having the exhaust sticking out the space that it leaves.

Guy on LR4x4 has just made himself a noo rear crossmember for his 90, out of 5mm plate. & he's put a square hole in it just below the numberplate. with the intention of poking his eggsauce out thru the hole He's stuck a piece ov box section in the hole and welded it front & back to make sure he int weakened crossmember. I suppose yer cud take an hole saw an do same with a bit of tubing.

I mite be talking daft ere - but dont alot of the mud-club boys move the exhaust to the side - so if they need to reverse, they dont plug the exhaust?

cheers lads, i did look at the gwyn lewis site but i wanted to know if anyone had experience of it. its all very well looking at pics but about all the problems a novice like me is going to have? hmmmm, think im gonna bodge it anyway!

I wunt have it stuck out so far. In fact I have it slightly behind the wing an a bit of tube thats bigger than the exhaust attached flush with the wing going over the exhaust. If the vehicle rubs against a tree or earth bank it's going to wipe the exhaust out and the wing.

Finished it

its moved itself out an inch or so since lineing it all up so i need to drill more holes in the finisher and move it inline with the bodywork. what you all think?

Where is the tutorial section? i would like to do one for this as there is no info out there at all.

post some more piccies of the underneath, showing the pipe routing and so on.

nothing special underneath. i just bought the smallest cherry bomb i could find (22.5" overall) cut the front pipe back as far as i could, where it was straight (engine x member?) then used SS flexi up over the chassis rail and through the wing. i made the sleeve from the bit i cut off to connect the flexi to cherry. (you could use reducer) a few exhaust clamps and 2 mounts. i also used a big jubilee clip to hold the bomb in place as it was vibrating alot.

other than that. a D44 finisher, a 70mm diameter exhaust end and a 95mm hole saw (internal dia. of the finisher is only 90, but its actually not that important to get the cut just right, it worked out better having the 2.5mm shelf between the body work and the finisher)

thats about it really.
