Was on way to work this morning and saw my battery light was flicking on:eek: so got out checked connections, all which seemed to be fine :confused::confused::confused: Bugger so looks like its the Alternator. Got back in my disco and carried on thinking it would be fine. Just got onto M40 and there is a sort of grinding noise and whirring noise coming from under the bonnet which affected my steering. Pulled over again belt is sat fine on the pulley hmmm ok:confused::confused::confused: ONWARDS....... Got off M40 had got slightly worse so another look under the bonnet and see its alternator bearing thats grinding. now at work hoping to limp back home (20miles) and hope my mate has a spare and can be the bestest buddy ever and change it for me :Cry::Cry::Cry::Cry::Cry::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
 
Is your PS pump on the same belt as your alternator?

Have you considered taking the alternator belt off and bypassing it with an emergency fan belt?

I always carry a length of Fenner Link belt for use in situations like this!

If your Disco is a doozil, all you have to do is get it running and hope that you have enough in the battery for the lights on your way home!

only any use if a 200tdi - 300tdi has the modern style belts which i don't think you can get emergency belts for?
 
You are always best carrying a spare shorter belt with a 300, its a pain that the WP runs of the same belt as the alternators are prone to bearing failure, mine went and I had to call the AA, wish I had a short belt then...
 
luckily 200 tdi.

yeah going to try and bodge it and leaving work at about 3:30 to avoid traffic and loss of light so dont have to use electrics too much. only prob is no extra belts to bodge with have done with bale twine before but have none of that either.
 
wax coated washing line / knicker elastic/ cheap tights / first aid bandage these are all available from pretty much any local corner shop conveinience store or indian managed establishment ( dont wanna start a racism row fer saying paki shop ) :D:D:D

always that sods law i had one in my car up until last week and put it in the pile of useful stuff to keep in the workshop :doh: :baby:error

hmm, seeing as mines a 300, what length would you need then, I carry a spare belt, never thought of a shorter one tbh
 
RAC are useless to give you an update on the situation. going to have to limp home and cut the alternator belt to stop the bearings from jamming like they were this morning..... wish me luck for 3:30

Im not sure personally as I sold my 300 and bought a 200 instead, it would be a case of order a few, try them and then send back the unused ones (unless someone on here knows that is)

if you could have got the belt off, you could have tied it outer the way wiv 2 cable ties instead of cutting it..


done thet on mine some months ago when alternator failed on my 200DTi
and ran on my twin batteries fer days wiv a charger topping them up in between.... :rolleyes:
 
right so on closer inspection not just a alternator. Dont know the complete damage yet but basically the crank wheel was wobbly as fcuk apparently its common that this happens either you lose it completely or they seize on. hopefully i can just get my mate to retap the thread and thats it........ now driving my mums 2.0t saab convertible. Feels so low that i feel my bum is dragging along the road lol.

ouch, thet sounds nasty.......

no, not yer bum on the floor,
yer wobbly bottom pulley, fcuked keyway & pulley bore...

but lets hope not eh... :):)



spoke of before, but I had a honda legend, bottom pulley in two parts wiv cast rubber damper between both parts, and yes, they came apart..
I pushed it back into place with some good black sealent as glue,
made long series drills & taps to work from above engine hight, drilled & tapped & countersunk two holes in bottom of V throught to fixed part of pulley on crankshaft.
used two cap headed bolts wiv thred lock on,
perfect job.
refitted alternator belt & other belts,
worked perfectly,
never wobbled nor had balance issues...






next.... :)

Anyone know how to get the Crank Nut off??? my friend couldnt get it off last night he kept turning the engine round instead, its a 200tdi auto and is in Park. has anyone done this before with a auto could really do with some help until i get the nut off i cant see what damage has been done :(

but he doesnt know how to lock engine safely to undo nut ,hows he going to judge whether cranks worn ,timing pulley or what to do about it ? , auto has no flywheel to jam but does have 3 drive plates 1 for starter ring gear one for t/c these arent robust and could be damaged by someone who doesnt know what there doing , you can buy /make a pulley locking tool , trying to use p which obviously wont work as theres no solid link to box from engine and is extremely weak so just as well, find a decent mechanic after all your asking mechanics for advice

must be a info fred on here somewhere,
but I had to take rad out (just to be sure)
got big socket to fit crank bolt,
long handled T bar, or breaker bar,
(or lump of strong tube over T bar handle)
position so is about a foot from chassis rail,
and flick starter with ignition key !!
could take of diesel stop wire from Injection pump first ???


all sounds horrific, but was the only way I could do it.
then had to follow info fred on how to assemble using my home made
crank/pulley holder to do it all up.

you really should search out how to fred,
and get a look at ready made tools fer job,
as I did so I could make my own tools.

I live in coastal Essex, but could have lent them to ya,
dunno if someones closer to you wiv the right tools.... ;)
