Hi all - northern numpty again.

Range rover P38 1995 4.0 with LPG

On driving to work this morning the battery light flickered on and of a few times then got the beep of doom on the message centre saying Alternator Fault and a steady battery symbol. I turned off the radio and side lights and drove the last 15 mins to the office.

Been back out after an hour and it starts but the batery light stays on. The belts look fine.

I have phoned the AA and they will be out shortly but would like a bit of background knowledge if they suggest just driving it home, would I make it 60 miles with headlights on? as they would have to uplift it i guess.

I have ordered a replacement alternator (it was making a noise a while back but then stoppped doing it so i thought it was ok but obviously not) as there was one on ebay cheap from Emmots when i was doing the dreaded how much will this cost me search so I got it on the thinking i could just resell it if it was not actually the alternator itself so i just need to get home I guess but a bit worried about running the battery down given the P38's great dislike of this!

Thanks fro reading the ramble, any thoughts appreciated!

A few systems maybe run directly from the alternator when engine is running. So driving home with headlamps on is a no no.

I guess a lot of it depends on the size and state of the battery but with the P38 being very electric heavy I don't fancy your chances.

In my 4.6 (1995 MY) the Alternator failed during the day, reasonable battery, not new - not old, and I managed 12miles with all loads off, HEVAC fans fuse pulled as you can't actually turn it all the way off...and it slowly just coughed pluttered, farted and stopped....lots of fault codes to be reset afterwards too!!!

Yep, forgot that and it's petrol with LPG, I should read more carefully!
Ere, us yorkshire tykes aint alci's, it's that lot over the hill that sup to excess:p

Sorry Keith thought you was a suvvener not a proper Brit. Respect. Well as much as a Yorkie can expect for a superior. :D:D:D

AA just been, really helpful and arranged uplift to take us home tonight. He tested and said no charge at all from alternator and not safe to drive it - was reading 11.something on his multimeter. He talked me through how to change it too for when the new one arrives including advising doing nothing for 10 mins when i conect battery back up, run for ten mins then let it stand for another ten mins, otherwise i might get 'a ****e load of error messages, air bag lights and reset notices' and need a computer to reset - He must have owned one i reckon!

Thanks again all for taking the time to reply, genuinly appreciated.

Oh yes, she is from North of the River, I forgot.....;):):D:D:D

For me, anything past Watford is considered a Northerner!!!:p

Don't worry when the Frogs invade we will look after you. We'll let the Ferrets loose and throw black puddings at them. Not the Ferrets, the Frogs. :D:D:D

So you're going to be my Knight in a Shining Red Range Rover are you??

Can't we just throw the French at the Black Pudding....??

Don't be silly a red Range rover is not stealthy enough. Would have it sprayed camo day glow orange first. Any captured Frogs cold take part in a high diving competition from the highest point on the white cliffs. With the tide out of course. :D:D

No good throwing black puddings, the French will eat them faster than you can throw them, they'll eat owt:p Probably eat the Ferrets too.

Yep and whilst they are busy we will shoot them. At least that is the battle plan at the moment. May have to source some turnips to throw in case any of them are veggie though. :D:D
