You guys are all great, one thing you can be sure of is that I will not be moving house I'm on my third wife already!!! but I will be leaving the Range Rover on a farm tomorrow for a few days so I will reconnect the klaxon and see if we have a problem with the pigs and sheep having a sleepless night. Cheers all.

I'm sure it will be fine :) let us no how you get on

Let me make myself perfectly clear on this one, (there is every chance of me getting my important little places rearranged for life here) but here goes, I have always run an old or should I say an older vehicle than anybody my wife may communicate with, but buy a P38 for your wife and try and pretend you are not really interested in having a bit more comfort in your old age and this is all for her and you will be in the sticky brown stuff. So this is how it is and I will make this work for the mrs as she has put up with far too much already, 2950 miles in a 24 year old defender from London to Oslo and back and only one hotel on route so if i can't sort a simple alarm issue I may be looking for wife number 4

.......... I hope you sort it then

After going through all the problems you have experienced (with the p38 not the wives) I disconnected the r/f completely without problems. Mine is also a 98, Datatec posted that later models may have problems with it disconnected. Mine was picking up spurious signals and was waking up the BECM and the alarm thinking it was being tampered with. When it realised that it was not being stolen it would relock the doors and go back to sleep. This was happening every 10 seconds with the result of flat battery and burnt out front locks. I changed the locks, battery and disconnected the r/f. Its been fine for over 18 months. I don't do a big mileage so using the key instead of the fob is not a problem.:)

Thanks tomcat for the useful info. As for the wife situation. Three times is less hassle than a P38
