Airbag deployment - advice on next steps & SRS light please

It's the SRS ecu/module that stores permanent crash codes, they can't be cleared using standard diagnostic/test equipment, not even a dealer can do this. I don't know if you can do anything if you take it apart, there are companies out there who can allegedly repair
It's the SRS ECU that has to be replaced which hides insides the centre console and is a bugger to get at. No coding to the car needed.
The airbag trigger mechanism is very simple but it's a sealed unit, I have not yet tried to take one apart, but if it could be opened up I reckon it could be reset. It is a part, that as far as I can find out, is not available to the public.
As Kermit said make sure the second hand one comes with a guarantee that it has not fired. I replaced mine after it had fired with one from a breaker and it was no problem at all.

Thanks @Datatek. I am back from being away from home and this is the next project. I will report back hopefully with good news !

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the great advice so far. An absolute goldmine of knowledge!

I've ordered the resistor as adivsed by @Datatek which will hopefully do the trick. As my airbag actually went off I believe it has logged a fault. With the fault present will the SRS light stay on even with the correct resistor in place, or will inserting the resistor turn the light off (but not clear the code)? I assumed I could clear the code like any other but a mechanic has told me I need a new ECU - is that correct ?

Thanks again for the help:)
hi andy did you ever get that srs light out.if so how.please tell me.

Hey.

Yes all sorted. Replaced the SRS ECU under the centre console with a second hand one of eBay (important not previously been fired) and I popped a resistor of the type mentioned earlier in the thread by datatek in place of the airbag. You need to get to the ECU first to make sure you have the right part number. Good news is it is plug and play, no programming required.

If I remember it took a few goes at clearing the codes with an appropriate and capable scan tool, i.e not a generic OBD one. At one point I thought in hadn't worked. In the end IIRC I ended up leaving the battery disconnected for a while and then clearing the codes.

Has been fine ever since.

Cheers
