I believe the 3.5 had a "flapper" and the 3.9 hot wire
Not all. I've a '92 Disco 1 3.5 Hotwire in my 90. I believe the late pre-3.9 Disco had HW on a 3.5

Hi all does anyone know if the 3.5 air flow sensor is the same as the 3.9?

Cheers
If yours is HW then yes, can be used on a 3.5 and 3.9

No, if its a Range Rover the 3.5 was “flapper” the 3.9 “hot wire”.
For a D1, all EFIs were hot wire. but the 3.5 air flow sensor had a different part number to the 3.9 and then there was two part number changes to follow the last one being mid 1995.
So for the D1 possibly not.🤔

I think at this rate I'll wing it and see if it works since I'm unable to source a specific 3.5 replacement, will be for a discovery not range rover

You may or not be lucky, some times a superseded part number can mean just the part now has a different means of attachment.
I expect it would be difficult to find what the differences were if any, even with the aid of Google.
