P38A Air con Charge Ports

I found a small leak from the low pressure charge port and as the valves are part of the housing they have to be renewed .I looked on ebay for replacements and found some but they are ib Germany and cost about £22 plus £14 postage so i thought i can run with widows open. I also checked Land Rover dealers (Harwoods)who have been helpful on other matters spares and they only sell the complete pipes and don't know if we can get them as its 20 yrs old. Then i tried the BMW agents here (Chandlers) and found a very helpful spares man that went out of his way to check BMWs of the same year and engine and came up with some part numbers for just the valves so i ordered them and the cost is £17.45 inc gst for both the high and low pressure ones .If they fit when i get them i will post the BMW part number for anyone else that is interested

I do enjoy the old threads of Grit arguing with you an Datatek. Great entertainment - usually arguing just for sake of it :D he did appear the other day on AG..then disappeared again??

those are not the ones and you cannot just fit the schrader valves in them you have to get the whole valve assembly

Interesting, I thought the valve body was part of the pipe on the P38, I will have take a closer look.
A minor leak past the valve should not matter as the cap should hold the pressure.

over the year it leaks out and there are 2 different size valves one for lp and one for hp and u use a 17 mm spanner for lp and 19mm spanner for hp and i cannot se anyway of removing the inards although it could be screwed in my shrader valve tool will not get anywhere near to do it

i have that kit u sshow on the post with 4 valve core removers and there is nowhere to insert them as the valves look nothing like the one in the picture and also those shown would be too small i also have the larger ones as well and none of them are remotely like those shown but if you think you can do it i will send you one of the old ones when i get the new ones.

oh and as i not sending it from Germany ill only charge you £7.

Don't need any thanks. The service valves are universal for R134a. Every vehicle on the planet that uses R134a has the same valves.

Harwoods used to be good, excellent service when I had my Jag, Chandlers were complete shyte when I had my BMW. You must be around the Chichester/Worthing area.

I have no problems with Harwoods in the past they have been helpful its just thatin this particular instance they could only supply the complete pipes with the valves and as they were land rover agents had no cross reference to BMW where as Chandlers the spare parts man i was dealing with went out of his way to cross reference the parts to a BMW same year and same engine .and it look like all the BMW of that era had the same part number and it looks similar to the valve .I will know Friday when the parts turn up.
I think that experience with the company is if you get someone that is interested in their job and willing to go the extra step and not just say we cant help you because its not the right VIN number or the right registration or not even the right marque and i was lucky to find some one like that,
and yes i am around that area when i am in the UK.

Now i have got the new valves i decided to dismantle the old one (not easy but can be done) and there is no hint of a schrader valve in them only spring loaded valve sealed with an O ring which could be replaced. In the picture are the schrader valves that can are meant to fit any R134 system and below is the one out of the P38 and if anyone is interested i can post the BMW part number for both valves as they are different sizes

That then explains things, BMW decided to use their own design service valves at some stage.
 
The new valves from BMW have been fitted and on closer inspection the new ones have schrader valves fitted so the older ones have been replaced but schrader valves cannot be fitted into the older housings
the BMW prart Nos for the new valves are
B64.50.9.177.577 138841/Valve
B64.50.9.177.579 13884/Valve
These part numbers are based on RHD 325TDS
So before ordering the new one check that the old ones are have not got schrader valves in them.
