If the cam is that knackered then the big-ends and mains will very likely need changing - as will the rocker shafts and arms which will have picked up swarf from the failing lobes.

well I can vouch for this,i have the same symptoms on my 4.6,so I did a compression check,160 to 170 psi on all cylinders,so i remove the rocker covers and the exhaust valve on no 6 is barely moving,lobe almost round....bugger!! and it was a new cam and followers less than 3 thousand miles ago. allegedly a genuine land rover one(well it was sealed in lr packaging anyway)hey ho engine out tomorrow.

If I were to take a guess - it would be aftermarket lifters scuffing and taking out the new cam or old lifters reused.

I got the lifters from turner engineering who state they use the same on their engines,so I would presume they are good quality.

Might be my own prejudice but as far as Rover V8 lifters go only OEM ones are (were) good quality. Back in the day I built a few Rover V8s - the only time I ever saw rapid wear issues is where aftermarket lifters were used.

well having removed the cam only about 6 lobes are ok,the rest are in varying state of decomposition,the sh+tpart water pump I put on at the same as the cam is also borked and the passenger side headgasket is leaking at the rear,also sh+tpart.i think I have learned my lesson,sh+tpart is sh+t.

A new cam insufficiently lubed and incorrectly first run can be destroyed in the first five minutes.

i'm well aware,however it was lubed and run at 2500 rpm for the first 20 minutes.ahh well **** happens

Many cam followers supplied with cam kits are crap. Specially if the cam kit is a cheap Chinese or India copy. And it is NOT always apparent. Lad paid a lot of money for a supposed Kent cam kit for an RS Turbo. Followers were made of soft cheese. There are piles of scank auto parts in even reputable shops. Auto suppliers are inundated with crap copies at the moment.
