African 109 odd serial number

Hey everyone,
I have got a Siii 109 which seems to have come from Zim, back when it was Rhodesia. It has factory fitted overdrive, extra fuel tanks, galv chassis and the serial number is giving me some trouble.
It is M106/3282.
I think it was probably a special order military/security vehicle.

If anyone can help shed some light that would be amazing, i can't find anything through the normal lists.

Where are you reading this number?...on another forum another 109 from SA has raised the fact SA numbers dont refer to anything if were KD built...
 
It is on the normal plate above the gears, and it's on the chassis in the normal place...

As far as I'm aware there is no difference to chassis numbers on military vehicles...my 101 forward control of which were only supplied to the military has standard LR chassis number although only came with a military stamped plate...knockdown series supplied to SA are virtually impossible to import and re-reg here in UK due to chassis number not corresponding to any LR records which appears you have...but dont take that as gospel...
 
Hmmm, that is very interesting.
I was under the impression it was a Rhodesian landy.

Any idea on where I can go to check the knockdown theory?
 
To be honest without a standard LR chassis number I dont know...
Maybe search how many were sent at the year it was built which was?...
 
Ha, no idea! It seems like early 70's...

Was a 'knockdown' just a series of parts sent and then reassembled from leftover parts?

No it was a vehicle built then dismantled crated up and shipped...it was easier than sending complete vehicle and no parts were missing...
 
The engine says the same, and the paperwork from when it was registered from Zim to Swaziland says it is from 1980...just seen that now!
 
Also, it has a full bench in the front and all dials are in Km...I am not sure if the single bench is unusual but I have not really seen that before.

Suggest you check out LRUK forum exactly the same question and same bench seat photo from a bloke wanting to import to UK...
 
I tried to order a Heritage certificate from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust (to get historic status!), only to be told mine was a CDK, and they don't have any records remaining for CDK's - they can't even tell me where mine was shipped to, although they suspect South Africa or Australia. My chassis number, however, is a regular 903xxxxxx number, so nothing like yours. Maybe the Heritage Trust would have more luck advising on yours...

My car was 'built' in 1979 (we think), but registered in the UK in 1981. Why it would have been built, disassembled, exported, rebuilt and then imported again 2 years later, I've no idea.

Really don't know. They (Heritage Trust) think it went to either SA or Australia and since Australia tended to use their own chassis plate for 'Leyland Australia', they think it went to SA. I thought M designations were special orders, but I can't remember where I read that.

Looking at CKD kits it seems like their numbers are different.

What makes them think it went to SA if they dont have records....when you say quarry was that in the UK?...

The engine number on the paperwork is the same as chassis number?...what is the engine number stamped on the block?...
