Advice please.

Been out looking at looking at a few over the weekend , I have to say there is some crap out there but wiith prices that dont reflect the condition of the vehicle.
I've also made the mistake of sitting in a Range Rover .............:confused:

This is worse than buying shoes .....
 
Just been chatting to a sales chappie , he tells me that I REALLY should look at a 300TDi as the 2.5 TD5 engines are prone to problems .
Oh yes forgot , he just happens to have a Tdi for sale .

The early td5 did indeed ave problems mainly with the cambelt tensioner (IIRC) however any that haven't been fixed will have snapped their belts long long ago. And so will have had a top end rebuild and had the modified tensioner fitted. So he's talking ****e. 300tdi'sdo have the advantage of having fewer electronic components to go wrong but that's about it.
 
looked at getting a new disco myself but the leccy faults keep putting me orf! personally i would like to stay no higher than a 300tdi. but thats my own opinion. just turned a low milage td5 90 down, dont know what it is, maybe i just like sticking with what i know:)
 
I have both a TD5 and a 300.

The TD5 engine is miles apart from the 300, smoother more powerfull, less agricultural and better to drive. If your intended use is more 'road' biased then go for the TD5, if it more 'off road' biased then go for the 300.

this is not saying that the TD5 is any worse off road, it's not, in fact it's just as good if not better (with Traction control), just it's electrickery can be prone to problems when you need it least!!! and there are more 'off road toys' available for the 300 series.

The cabin in the TD5 is a more pleasant place to be: quieter, air con, nicer controls, better lighting in the boot, better stock audio system and comfortable headrests.

Being all computer controlled the TD5 engine can be chipped... now your talking about a vast difference... a genuine sporty character!
 
This wont be NEW as in BRAND NEW , cos I refuse point blank to buy a new car ever . after being stung once . I cant see the point in driving something out of the showroom and loose a few grand in depreciation straight away. Other half is desperate for me to have the Freelander as I mentioned , as he is in Halewood factory , but having seen the way they test them on the local roads AND heard the horror stories of part problems if I never had a car I wouldnt have one of them .
BTW other half doesnt even drive !!:eek:

Er... TD5 don't have a cambelt. Uses a chain. That's one definite reason I wouldn't buy another 300TDi (which had problems with the cambelt tensioner):confused:
 
Dont forget the 300 tdi has the benefit of the door tops rusting out too, so after time, air con becomes standard....that pikey car dealer wants shafting!!!
 
ere! my 200 has air con, and i mean the proper one not the door vent type! sorry i meant not JUST the door vent type, i find this one cheaper on the mpg than the factory fit one!

The LR I am meant to look at today is advertised as an ES , but they have just told me that it was originally brought in from South Africa and that the spec is not ES .They only found this out when they contacted a dealership with the details off the plate ,as they bought the LR themselves only last year , should I be concerned or do I leave it alone ? Also if I do go ahead and buy does any of this have any bearing on the price .

FYI the specs are - GS bog standard, XS sporty half leather, alloys etc, ES full leather, heated seats, alloys, electric seats - the works!

Hope this helps a bit.
