Advice on either a Tdi or Td5

Hi all, this is my 1st post and ive been throught alot of the pages but not really found much to amswer my dialema.
Im looking to maybe go to Brightwells auctions and get a Disco, I have been to auctions before so im not bad at picking motors.
But im stuck between what all the car guides say about how dodgy an older Tdi is likely to be at high miles and alot do seem to have done high miles, and the Td5 which does seem to be either resonably priced and heavy on parts price wise or they are expensive to buy even on a 99 high miler.
would be greatful for any words from owners of these motors.
im prob looking to pay no more than 3000 max and am not a fan of expensive car spares which ruled out a Range rover p38 and I can do servicing and minor repair jobs myself.

Like any motor all you can do is have a good look and cross your fingers. Brightwells do have a 1hr refund policy unless it's sepecifically says sold as seen on the catalog. Rot is a bigger problem than engine wear. even on a 99 model. my 1993 200tdi ran sweet as a nut but the body work was rotten I know someone who brought a 98 300tdi and it had rot in the rear engine mount and the drivers sill.
 
Well decided after following your link badadj and from what ive seen you say pikey bout the veg oiol thing a tdi it is just gotta decide a 50/50 mix or full 2 tank system!!

Find a TD5 and go for the ES model. it will be the best thing you will buy.

Having had just about every landy going, my ES is mustard.

Ride is way better, off road is just what I need, bearing in mind I live on a farm , but not into heavy off roading any more. Performance is great.

Down side is way more gizzmo's. So make sure everything works, including the heated elecrtic seats, load leveller etc.

I was in the same boat as you not sure to go TDi or TD5, but eventually came down on the side of TDi 300.

Partly because I found a good clean, low rust one with Full service history at £2200, and partly because I hear too many stories about EARLY TD5's having significant engine and other problems.

Ultimately you'll come across a nice motor - and it won't matter too much which it is. Clean & rust free, that's the key.

Yes I've had a few probs on my 99TD5 (cracked head, burst ACE) but it's still a MUCH nicer thing to drive. I wouldn't go back to a TDi unless I wanted to keep it for a really long time (TD5 electronics gotta die sometime) - but even then it'd probably rust away. Try to get to drive them both.
 
Personally I'd go for the 300tdi. I've got a 200 at the moment bought off a friend who then bought an early TD5. He's had a couple of expensive problems but the 200 is still going strong (touch wood). Of course, it could all be down to luck...
