ABS Fault

Hi Guys,
I got rid of the Disco with the Alarm issue, got another one which is much nicer but same year, spec etc..
1997 ES 3.9V8I but the abs light has just started to come on and a few times now the ABS has actually kicked in while braking but there is no light on when this happens..
Only done it a few times but can only assume it will get worse so where do I start checking? is this a common fault?
Are there any good Disco garages near Kingston/Surbiton ?

dont know about the garages but check for wheel bearing play, and try knocking the sensors in a bit, some times have just come out a bit far and it saves you garage fees if its just simple

Great big relay on RHS of engine bay next to fuse box. I had corrosion on the contacts & this gave a load of trouble.
On another occasion tapping the sensors did the trick.

Hi stu you can check the fault code on you dash using a paperclip across pins 5 & 15 on the OBD2 socket. Before you do this you must disconnect the abs relay situated under dash on the passenger side probably second row in of the relays with the green relay carrier. you will have to google the flash codes. Othersise check sensors with multimeter disconnect each sensor in turn connect multimeter and spin wheel by hand set low volts ac, should read 4-5v if lower or no reading press sensor in further till reading is about 4-5v. As the others said check all wheel bearings and connections for play and corrosion.

I put a post a while ago about a problem I had with ABS and the people on this site were not the most helpful with suggestions.

Thanks for the info guys, I have taken the plug off the pump itself for now as I am a little concerned about random abs kicking in and not letting me stop where i intended especially as people look at me and think "he's got a nice face I'll assume he will stop and let me walk in front of his huge Disco"
which hasn't happened at least twice... people must just think I was having a bad day

Sorry its an old thread but its the only relevant one i have found and the OP never posted an outcome.
ABS light on = does not work, I know what to expect when i brake.
ABS light off = fine 90% of the time, but then every now and then it kicks in and bang goes the stopping distance. Nearly caused an issue @ the weekend

Its a 300tdi Auto R plate 98 (ES :doh: )

MOT due in OCT and its mainly used as an off roader, so I just want the ABS disabled and then I'll weigh up my options in Oct.

So read Haynes Manual lists 3 relays (System load, system pump & warning relay) and states they are behind passenger side of facia on bracket?

Which one should be removed and where in this photo is it talking about?

Or someone suggested just unplugging the ABS pump, can't see why that wouldn't work, apart from water / muck contamination

And someone on this thread suggested cleaning the contacts on the big relay behind the fuse box:

checkout the attached file and u'll be smarter regarding D1 ABS diagnostics....it's the same for V8 or diesel

I've been through an abs issue 96 300tdi so can help. Ask away. I used the odbc plug 5/15 pin method and found the faulty wheel, tried pushing the sensor in but only worked for a while until hitting a curb or similar then same symptoms as you, abs kicking at low speed when no skid, bought swivel kit as it was a worn swivel causing the sensor to get pushed out. Problem solved.

Here in nz the worn swivel would cause a test fail at some point when the tester noticed it anyway.

I reckon it might be easier/cheaper to fix the swivel if that's the problem with your abs, rather than remove the abs but your call obviously.

Needed o disable it in. Hurry as we're in the lake district and big decents and abs kicking in unexpectedly is rather scary.

I've taken the 5 amp fuse out which has shut off the abs. But the check engine light gives a ouble flash every few seconds. Can I ignor that until I get home or should I be putting the fuse back?

I've left the fuse out on mine for about a month. Put it back in and everything started working again. Only difference is mines a 1994 300tdi
