ABS fault light has come on. I have a basic code reader (pro Scan) but cannot access the ABS fault code with it. Is this normal and need an expensive code reader to access these codes.

You need Nanocom/Faultmate or the like, a standard OBD scanner will not read P38 codes except the petrol engine ECU I believe.
might be helpful to say what car petrol or doozal and what year as someone may have a nanocom close by and willing to plug it in a location may help also
