Hello,

I've driven to Ipswich from Leeds today and every now and again there's a strange rattling sound coming from around the gearbox / transfer box area (directly under the gear stick), it gets worse and then it vanishes. Increasing / decreasing speed and driving over bumps doesn't seem to make it any worse or better, it just comes and goes. Also, at one point as I was slowing down it made a high velocity spinning sound as if there was some fabric caught in wheel spokes for example. My UJ's are all new and in good shape and there doesn't seem to be anything loose underneath. Could it be something like my handbrake drum and its internals?

Cheers

Check the mud shield on the transfer box front output flange, mine came loose and was spinning .

Good thinking! That's the push fit insert isn't it? Is there only one on the front of the transfer box or is there something behind the drum brake too?

Cheers

It's pressed on , I took the flange off then tapped it with the hammer to make the hole smaller, seems okay now.

Think there's just a circlip on the rear to stop the prop bolts falling out .

Thanks. I've just found a thread on lr4x4 explaining how to repair a transfer box output bearing so I'll check that for play too.
