please help :welcome2:

Humour me. Go out with a big hammer and WELLY the starter motor casing (really hard). Just try it. Otherwise, check the starter connections - have you got a volt meter to ensure power is getting to it.

What engine is it - the starter is a bit fiddly to get to on the 200 and the td (between about c plate and about h plate) and probly the same on the 300 (about H to S i think) - standing at the front of the car lookin in the engine bay, it's on the right hand side about 2/3 of the way down the engine.

Thanks for all the help gonna give it a try tomorrow will let ya know how I get on and it's a 2.5td 1989

try giving the ickle wire on the starter motor a wiggle. If that doesn't work then check it is turning live when the key is turned to the 'crank' position.
yep the wires on my starter popped off regularly but i didnt fix it cos it stopped scallys half inching it

have tried wacking it and sprayed all connections with wd40 still no luck so have give up and rang the aa

fokin hell... you give up easy!!
bet you sprayed that WD40 from a distance and just slightly wacked the starter....

are you a bird?

sounds like it though....
which in that case, completly understand givin in and calling the AA

I reckon the starter motor is gone...

You can stick a screw driver across the 2 big power terminals on the starter so by-pass the solenoid (if the solenoid is gone then if should start cranking over). There will be a fairly big spark and probably make you jump, banging your head against the underside of the bonnet, but try again and see what happens. Also, make sure you take it out of gear so it doesn't drive away with you hanging over the wing..
If that fails, starter is most probably gone. And if you want to save a few quid, they are not too dear to buy 2nd hand and not too difficult to fit. And if you get a Haynes manual you cant really go wrong, unless you are a bird after all..
