A lifted Landy is never as nice to drive on the road as one on std set up.

and as per previous replies one on std springs and shocks will very rarely let you down off road.

what a load of ****

just lifted my 90 and its a lot better to drive :p:p

mines lifted , big wheels, etc, no handling probs, can let go of steering wheel annd drives straight which is a bonus, but if you do lift it spend wisely and dont cut corners i changed evert bush and bolt connected to the lifting operation

Lift if you want to fit tyres bigger than 33 inch,

I have fitted Red/White RRC HD springs all aorund on my 90 its technically a 3 inch taller springs than std 90 however as the springs are a softer rate 175lbs inch opposed to 215lbs an inch fitted to a std defender setup it actually settles about 1.5- 1 inch higher. REMEMBER these springs are softer and all the same height whereas std 90 or any other LR springs are all different heights in each corner. Fitting a kift "kit" is never good because a cheap one is not actually a comprehensive kit and will affect handling etc. I use std shocks at £12 each you can't go wrong my rears have been fitted for 3 years no problems. I have driven 90's 110's discos and RRC and they all handle that bit horrible when lifted. If you just rebush every suspension link, fit new trac rod ends the A frame balljoint aswell as LR intended you will have yourself a very nice handling LR fart superior to 99% of the lifted landys out there. Most old ****ters or old buses handle ****e before a lift kit because they are worn out and feels sloppy fitting a lift kit tightens it up but if it was sorted before hand then the difference is more than noticable.

Offroad Red/Whites were the triallers choice for may years as they are very cheap softer and longer (Like Andrex). now days terrifirma and others make rated springs for motors and have taken president however at performance vs cost red whites are just fine. If you intend on carring any weight look at std springs or indeed HD springs (find out exactly the Lbs per inch before parting with any cash). Be careful how the "lift" is achieved and pay particular attention (if looking at kits) to articulation people pay alot of money for atriculation. However save the dosh and buy a axle locker and you will get as far as these guys with show suspension droop if you can drive half decent. P.s If you get into it join an offroad club thats associated with Association of land rover owners. No bull****e no bling tricked up tat just stuff that works tried and tested.

Buy a Rope not a strop! come back in 10 years and tell noobies the rightous path. Avoid noobies becoming the lifting strop donning, wrecked discovery driving a pay and play hack shouting about how great a lift kit is that cost him £400 quid spinning up diff centres while stuick in a wee puddle blowing them apart with noo chunky tyres. You will then understand that a £350 difflock in the rear and std height /red/whites setup will be just fine driving around past these pretend "extreme" wannabes. Sitting in your warm comfortble defender driving past while the muppets are dragging half a rotten disco out of the mire! screaming that the diffs are weak and that his snorkle fell off and now his engine os fooked again. You can sit back and enjoy because some of us that know and have seen people come and go over many years are here offering you advice to help you avoid falling into that dark place.

Happy Xmas!

Jai,

Any links to where you bought the Red/white springs?

Sound ideal as im only running 265's and I just want more capable suspension with a bit more flex.

Im guessing because they are a longer spring they allow for better articulation? But do std shocks not limit you a bit? Also because they are a lower spring rate does that mean they wont handle a winch bumper and winch? Although saying that I see you have a winch so no problem?lol

Sorry for all the Q's but theres so many options out there iv no idea where to start.lol.

Also, what kinda locker you using?

I got them from Padocks but thet were genuine parts. Winch bumper they do sit a little bit lower at the front because of the extra weight. The rears (If Empty) seem a bit hard trialling but not bad for daily use with a spare wheel tools etc. Forget articulation Springs unless stupidly hard do very little to limit articulation shocks and mounts limit what articulation you can achieve. I use std. Because I have lowered my bump stops 2 inches to stop my wheels fowling the rear of the tub and I use std shocks I have actually limited my articulation ALOT and its worse than std.

Compression is 2 inches less and droop is not far from ride height because the std shocks bottom out. I could lower the shock mounts OR use longer shocks however this will cause me more problems than I wish on my worse enemy so I'm sticking to this setup. The locker in the back helps tremendously (to be fitted to new axle soon). I have a detroit locker. A suspension setup takes lots of time and mine is not ideal however it serves me very well and I'm very happy with it. In my personal opinion articulation is best shown to crowds at billing if you want to get through terrain and not get stuck there is far better equipment to buy than drooping dangly bollix from Mr Blings automotives!

Ah right ok, id have to make sure I went for genuine then as I'v heard bad things about **** part springs.

Theoretically Im guessing it prob wouldnt be too bad on the front with a winch bumper plus the V8 is slightly lighter so might get away with it.

I was all for lowering my shock mounts to get more droop but what are the problems you mention? Was tempted in just keeping my springs I have now (they are hard but sit perfect),and using lowered shock mounts to give me more droop....but if you dont think its too important and will cause more problems than advantages.

A locker would be brilliant, but will have to wait til funds allow. Been looking at KAM locks as im scared of handling issues and reliability with the Detroit. Although, im used to driving a rwd car so am used to being careful in the wet. How do you find it?
