5th and reverse not engaging.

Just purchased a TD5 2004 defender with 98k on the clock. 5th gear and reverse do not do anything. The lever goes into both as normal but does not engage the gear. Any ideas? It’s had an overdrive fitted to it but that works fine in 3rd and 4th gear as it should.

Helo Tgs, Is there any noise beyond the usual whirring when you let out the clutch in those gears? Was it like that when you bought it?

When you have the engine turned off and you put the lever into 5th you can hear a clicking noise. ive just phoned my local land rover specialist and they say its likely to be the layshaft and requires a gearbox replacement/refurbishment.

A likely issue is the bearing that supports the back end of the lay shaft has failed allowing it to drop so that gear teeth at that end can not engage, clicking is likely teeth just touching. Bad luck there and it will be a box out job.
