Hope some one can help.

My freelander recently was driven over a field when it started to spin, however tc light came on as it should, but noticed I wasn't moving far!

Popped my head out of the window and noticed that it was only the front wheelas that had drive in them, but managed to get out of the field just!!!

My first thought was that the propshaft had been removed, however on inspection everything seems to be fine and in place. Also there is no strange noise when driving along at any speed to suggest that it is the ird.

One thing I have noticed different to other freelanders that I have driven is when driven on full lock there is no biting or pulling at all to suggest that it's 4wd.

Hope some one can help. Thank you

Yes everything seems to be coonected fine, which makes me think it's a problem with VCU, would that cause it?

There is a kit that can be fitted to the IRD which allows the prop to be appear connected but it isn't inside, search these forums for details as I read about it recently.

ok, will try tomorrow. If it turns i take it that the VCU is finished? But a good chance that the IRD wont be damaged because it hasnt seized if this is the case.

I'll try and have a good look at it over the weekend and let you know how it goes!!! Thank you all for the advice much apriciated

As you can see mate, you will get plenty of good advice from the tractor boys.

The vcu is probably the problem. There is a company called Beaumonts engineering who sell VCU's that give no drive to the rear wheels. I bought one last year under the impression that it was ok until I needed 4wd and realised I didnt have it. I did put a warning on this site about it but the post was removed. Beaumonts claim that there vcu's are designed to save wear to the ird unit. They only tell you this when you phone and complain. My opinion is that they rip the guts out of the unit and sell them as quality parts with no hint on there website or at point of sale that the unit WILL NOT GIVE 4wd. Unless you need 4wd at any point you would never know.
Chock the front wheels, leave hand brake off,Jack the back up, hold the rear prop section and try to turn it by hand. If it turns the vcu freely, you probably have a Beaumont special.

Do the BS vcu's have the supplier/manufacturers company name on them? Or a reference number? Or anything identifying them as a BS unit? My original LR one has GKN and a number on it.

Edit: When ah said BS, I ment Beaumont Special. Honest. Shorry. ;)

that sux that a company would do that. all the weight of the prop but no 4x4. be easier to just drop the prop.

You can tell the BS units by the **** welding around the egde of the main casing. They are also extremly out of balance causing major vibration. Like I said, tbere was a good thread on here about these units but it was removed due to legal reasons?????

I think a name and shame section might be in order and maybe someone one on here who has legal experience could make sure the wording is ok and edit if not. Then we could all put our own experiences with companies and the cream would soon rise to the top.

I agree. The section about IRD specialist is still a sticky thread at the top of the front page, yet I put a thread up about B******s and it gets removed. Im guessing the admin must have some kind of special relationship with them. Its nice to see that the admin remove a thread warning people not to use a company who are ripping off the very people using theire forum.

Here is the email i got from admin explaining the removal of the thread::::

Hiya Mate

The reason that the thread has gone walk abouts is because LZ was threatened with legal action over what was stated. Nobody is disputing what you said isn't true but unfortunately the site owners don't like spending their whole time in court.

(if I could please ask you to keep this to yourself)

Cheers
Ratty

Just ask yourself. Slander vs trade description????????
