4.6 RR Help Please

I have my first 4.6 Range Rover Petrol, and I was doing a small service oil fillters so on, But I noted something when I removed the oil cap it look like brown rust ? what can I do to help stop this going on. Is it all to do with water ? or is a brether needed insted of a oil cap. Please will this brown slug show it self. I ask a main Land Rover Del and i was to not to worry it is becauce the engine has not been run on a long run yet and needs to do this ? I am about to drop the oil and put a well known brand in and new Land Rover fillters I have changed the spark plugs my £11.90 each that was a shock to the blood stream. She runs very well bit more go than me old 2,5 can any one help about matters of brown rusty slug inside oil cap >

I have had this on other cars and it sounds like it could be emulsified oil. Head gasket problems are one probable cause but before you start worrying wipe the excess gunk away and take it the RR out for a long run (say 30miles+) with varying speeds + revs. Constant short runs can lead to the water not evapourating and emulsifying the oil.

Thank you for this help, I was told this IE emulsifying the oil constant short runs I am doing around 27 per day at the mo thats both ways so I will try a longer run. It may have been standing for some months, What will I see in the norm ? Oil ? or dust dry will oil ever come this high agin ?

I can only tell you what the wife got from constantly doing short runs i.e under 5 miles, school runs/shopping etc. This never really allowed the engine to warm up fully and hence she had problems with the oil. It isn't too much of a problem but it does mean more regular oil changes than the service book recommends.

Once you have changed the oil and flushed it out (as suggested) and refilled with some quality oil I would keep a close eye on it for a while, just to be sure. I would have thought that 13/14 miles would warm the engine sufficiently for the problem not to re-appear, especially as 'summertime' is upon us.

Usually, if the oil is in good condition, that is all you should see on the cap. If any mayonaise type stuff re-appears after doing a few long trips then I would be looking to replace the head gasket.

Another way of confirming the problem is by checking the coolant...is there any signs of oil in there?

Thanks for that, i hope its short runs that has done this but are you saying the oil will come this high once runing norm IE if I look into the hole I may see black oil not red rust.
 
Oil will obviously circulate around the engine and if you removed the cap while the engine was under load I would expect to get a face full of oil so yes I would expect oil to come up this far and the 'red rust/dust' you describe should go, the filler cap shouldn't be dry in any case.
