I cant remember how much I told you but when I pulled those heads from Aussie ebay down here was quite a bit of play in the valve guides which was a shame as they were listed as low mileage recon ones according to the advert. Anyway I sent them to the machine shop who were going to fit new guides , they then called and said they were going to re-sleeve the current guides.

They then called back today and said that the only guides and or sleeves they could get hold of would have 4 thou of play which is about what they have now according to the measuring they have done.

They have said that some play would be beneficial when running on lpg although they are unsure of just how much would be acceptable.

They are bronze guides, and they did feel pretty darn slack to me, when I looked in the e book for tolerances it said the valve guides were parallel but the valves were tapered, however these valves were not tapered
Many thanks for any help you can offer.

what do you think guys?

how does slack guide have an effect on lpg ?bronze liners are tight when fitted you then broach them out quite a few times to get valve to fit you can off course go to far and get them slack ,guide should be as good as fit as possible but with free sliding

a bit id think ,its not hard to make guides or machine other stock ones ,more than one way to skin a cat,do they know how to fit liners ,are they using k line liners ?

no idea mate tbh, bit annoying really as they have had them for 6 weeks and only told me today ffs.

I will see if I can get past the girl on the phone and speak to the machinist next time.

while I think of ways round this with no budget left now, I have a sludged up 3.5 efi motor in the garage with no doubt worn rocker arms and shafts but with the bigger valves which is good, I also have a pair of early 3.5 heads in good knick but with the ****ter smaller valves. will the rocker gear from the earlier head fit the efi head?

jon ive only seen the first vid but its more or less what they offered to do by the looks of it but now they are saying they can only get within 4 thou of the right size for the valve stem- not sure why but cant get them to do owt else by the sounds of it ????? why who can say but I am waiting long enough tbh lol

4 tho is a bit to much imo.
I bet its down to the tools they have available, might be worth getting it done somewhere else.. or even do it yourself

you may well be right mark, I just wish they had said before instead of a 6 week wait for nothing :(

I will see what james has and go from there as if james's are in good nick they will be better for performance as efi/sd1 heads have bigger valves etc etc. Just an expensive paper weight getting those p76 heads from aus by the looks of it :(

Bit of an update, dont think I have been doing feck all its just its been in 5 min bits when I have the time and uploading pics is still a ballache even in 2013 sadly.

Front cover all done and lacquered, oil pump gears skimmed down and new gasket made old oil seal bodge holes tig welded up, ground flat on inside for retrofit neoprene seal, seal fitted , NOS water pump fitted.

cleaned inlet manifold to within an inch of its life, machined two new brass fitting for air and water and fitted new temp sender, water outlet corroded to feck, all built up with ali tig weld and filed round again with hose lip. new stat fitted (at 74c as these get hot when squeezed in to a rrc engine bay) and all engine lacquered

fecked about cleaning- oh so much cleaning of p76 heads only to find valve guides fecked, waited months for machine shop to say they couldnt do any more about it then james kindly gave me some heads Noisy what are they exactly number: ERR4328?? so grateful to james getting me out of the **** with these for free :D

New rocker shafts and arms from turners built up on to some old spare pedestals and springs I had, plus invested in a preload kit, thats another £300 gone :(

They have been skimmed, cleaned them a bit more (boy am I tired of cleaning engine parts!), replaced a couple of seals and noticed a little corrosion on valve seats from storage after being lapped before lapped in one head to remove but as per the pic I cant get it all out of one valve, gone fine, course and going fine paste again obviously but it really wont come out.

Am I being too anal or should I keep going?

Also you will see what I was hijacking threads about with those comp gaskets, can you see the liner inside the fire ring in the pic? too big for a 89mm bore engine? the old one is there too and where its not squashed it may be the same and part numbers are right?

finally there is one pic of the head mating face with an arrow to a nick in transit, the scratches are where I took the burr away with the end of the steel rule, will it be a problem you think?

Anyway just after a tube of loctite for main studs and assembly is booked for only day Im free in aug, hoping to get as far as the heads being on so at least its sealed in there!

Oh yeah, anyone else having trouble getting through to v8 tuner? gave the wife the job as she wanted to get me a present and she has tried calling a lot of times but no luck yet?

cant see a pic with an arrow, the valves look ok to me, mine were similar and my comp test is good so the must be sealing.
The gaskets look a bit big to me, but I used tin!
and JESUS that cover is clean!

BTW when you upload a pic click on the individual pic and copy this link and paste it into chat :)
