It did seem to rev OK, but to be honest the engine is quiet anyway so it could well have had a missfire without me noticing. It switched to lpg after half a mile and then all seemed ok.

Is it possible to disable each injector in turn to see if that stops the smoke?
 
Pull the Plugs and have a look at them..

Any fouling

Steam cleaning

Listen to the exhaust you should hear if it's missing..

you could pull each injector in turn, not all at once OBVS ;)

Depends on how sensitive the ECU is to a unplugged injector, on some engines it will shut down and throw codes but I'm not to sure on the jlr engine.
You could try with more advice. Saves pulling parts out.
 
if it was misfiring he would get a fault code for the misfire on the cylinder. my P38 does that !!

the only codes he is getting are P0171 and P0174 which too lean on left and right bank too lean doesn't fit with stuck open injector.

the only thing I can think of with too lean codes and white smoke is crank case pressure.

DUH ! ive just thought !! i'm tired and was think overpressure in the block...

if the crankcase pressure is too low he would get the pressure differential hence the sucking of the oil filler cap and the hiss when it comes off (see the previous post of crankcase pressure and P0171 / P0174 codes you tub vid I posted) if the ccv valve is stuck he'd get vacuum in the case and it would be sucking oil up either from the sump or down through the heads resulting in white smoke in the exhaust.
 
How would I check the ccv?

Would I definitely get a misfire code with a faulty injector, so can I definitely rule that out?
It is possible the lean codes and smoke are unrelated - the codes came up before the smoking and it doesn't seem to smoke on LPG.
 
with engine running undo the oil filler cap if it has suction on it then there is negative case pressure, you can also pull the plugs and see if they are oiled up.

the engine is getting something in with the combustion chamber, water or oil. you've got the symptoms and the codes, you now need to do some work to find the evidence. unfortunately, no on is going to be able to give the magic answer say 'its this, change this widget and all will be right with the world'..

harsh, but that's the situation. pull the plugs first. have a look a them, even post the pictures of them here. I'm leaning toward it being the PCV/CCV

The Jag engine is sublime. Bit of an issue with tensioners on earlier models but we'll before yours. Seem to remember some pipe in the v giving issues but maybe I am mixing that up with something else.

No, you are correct mate, I've just done one on the XJR, what a tw*t of a job.You have to take half the car and most of the top of the engine apart just to get access to the rear bolt on the supercharger :eek:
 
Not sure if I'm jumping in with no experience of Range Rovers, but I believe P0171 and P0174 could refer to the MAF - I had a pig of a job with similar symptoms on an old x-type with this. I found a thread here which may have some clues to help - and sorry for pointing to a different forum :)
