hey all.

How do you get the wastegate actuator rod to move on a 300tdi?

i.e due to it's location I can't get it to move using just my fingers, so i'm not sure if it's seized or working fine. It would be nice to know as i'm having problems which could be caused by a sticking or stuck wastegate...

thanks J

they are quite hard to move ,puts some air down diaphragm pipe ,you would only have problems if it was sticking open and loosing your boost

I believe it could be sticking open causing over fueling then smoke at around 2000rpm, especially when coming off throttle.

or am i barking up the wrong tree?

have you checked hoses arent split or collapsing ,do you have access to air line as pressurising diaphragm should push it open or not if it already was

Thanks for the replies.
I don't have an air line so I guess i'm just gonna have to get the pliers on it.

I haven't had another chance to look yet. Does the actuator rod push out or pull in ? (need to know which way i should be pulling it?)

Also can anyone explain to me what the symptoms would be of a stuck open wastegate? and those if it was stuck closed?

thanks J.

stuck open you would have no boost as it would let it all go down the exhaust.
stuck closed you would only really notice when you booted it, and built up full boost cause it would just keep boosting

i may have a similar problem i think, i have had my disco for a few weeks now and have wondered if there should be more go to it. this is my first turbo diesel but not my first turbo car. on the petrols i have had i can here the turbo spooling clearly but on the disco i cant.

i have had the boost hoses off to check the turbo is freely moving and it is, im not sure whether the actuator is seized open and so not spooling the turbo. does anybody have a photo of what it should look like at idle off with the engine off? i cant find my camera at the moment so cant post a pic of what mine looks like right now but i will asap. cheers, and sorry for hijacking a bit.

Don't expect the disco to match any car, it's a heavy lump and generally underpowered a bit. You can only just hear the turbo when its doing about 2500-3000rpm on mine.

Look for the thread regarding fuel pump tweaks but go easy on it:)

300 Tdi? I can quite clearly hear the turbo spooling up from below 2000rpm on my 160k miles bag of spanners 300 Tdi :)

I beleive what you may have meant was........

"300 Tdi? I can quite clearly hear the turbo breaking up from below 2000rpm on my 160k miles bag of spanners 300 Tdi
