Hi everybody , what size spanner fits the nut to take the fan off , dont want to modify half my toolbox till i find the right one , workshop manual and haynes both say special tool number so+so,

thanks for any help cheers Catnut

It's 32mm and very flat, about 2mm.

You can get em off evil bay for about £5 but I welded one up out of a bit of flat steel.

Once spanner sorted give it a tap with a hammer as pikey say's ANTI-CLOCKWISE.

Yer pillock!! it's CLOCKWISE to undo the reverse of a normal thread. FFS I even wrote CLOCKWISE in the post you quoted. FFS I despair of some people I really do.

ere Pikey - which way to clocks go?

i bought a 32mm spanner for 50p at a car boot sale and ground the thickness down until it would fit the nut

Doesn't it depend on whether you are looking at the clock from the back or the front?

I thought the viscous coupling fan mounting thread was left handed, but I was corrected some weeks ago by an expert who assures me it's a normal right hand thread.

If that is so, stand facing backwards into the engine bay, place your spanner down from the top over the hexagonal section, and belt it from your right to your left with your hammer. If I'm correct, it will loosen and come off.

300 is a left hand thread, TD5's are right hand thread.

You may need to knock up a tool that holds the pully in place while you whack your spanner, a bit of thinish flat bar with a hole in it would do.. undo the bolts on the pully and bolt your bar back on than whack away!
Drop a little smear of grease on the thread when you put it back on.

The foolproof way to check which way a viscous fan undoes is to look at the fan pulley and see what side of the belt it is driven by . ie if driving on the inside then fan rotates clockwise. if driving on the back of belt then it rotates counter clockwise. when you know this you can work out which thread it will have on it. cos they are designed to tighten up through normal rotation.

easier way is to start the engine. :D

you could try that..... but would probably be going too fast to see and could cause some serious finger loss!!! lol

Thanks to all for your help , and just so you know it is left hand thread ie the reverse of normal ,and it is 32mm , thanks again Catnut .
