What's the chassis like? Rear crossmember ok?

Any corrosion on the bulkhead?

P.s. That chequer plate will almost certainly be there to hide corrosion, so you'll want to take a very close look at the vehicle and give the chassis a good poke with a big screwdriver.

Assuming the chassis etc are solid, that's not an unreasonable price. I'd be happier at £6k or less.

For one of the later Tdis with County spec in the current market if it's clean and solid not widely out of price

If you've not seen this guide, worth a read

Defender Buyers Guide

Would worry far less about mileage and more about chassis, crossmember, bulkhead, engine smoke and how it drives

Thanks, It has just had a new rear crossmember fitted. What the rest of the chassis is like is unknown until I ring them in a bit (its a little too early in the day :p). I have been told, and the advert states it runs and drives "Extremely well", well it should for the age/mileage. But they would say that wouldn't they. I did note the chequer plate. If I got it, it would all come off for a spray. would £5600 to £5700 be a good starting point for bargaining considering the cost of parts assuming the chassis is OK?

Not being funny, but there really is no substitute for laying under it with a hammer

If you can take someone with you who knows Fenders all the better

Would really not advise relying on whatever the seller tells you

Never any harm starting low! If it really is solid, £6k would be a fair 'shake on it price'

EDIT: Just looked at Autotrader, amazed at how much Defenders are being advertised for just now!

+1

Also check that the new crossmember is decent quality and properly fitted. If it's flimsy Britpart rubbish, you can expect to be doing that job again in the not-so-distant future.

Whereabouts is the vehicle? If someone is nearby, cake and/or beer might buy you a very knowledgable person to come along and give it a thorough going over.

Yea, so far I have turned down two defenders due to rust holes on the chassis. The owners where wanting around £7k!!! I have a friend who works in a garage and another who re-built his defender so it sounds like a road trip! Last one took me around 35 minutes to completely check including Refractometer checks of coolant etc. What worries me is there is some marking on the bulkhead judging by the photos (I don't know the extent) and there is corrosion on every panel. Its 120 miles away from Exeter so not too bad. I also don't know if the cambelt has been changed so I also need to factor that in. Sounds like a LOOONNGG conversation with the owner later

Just had a look at the other photos. It looks pretty tidy and unmolested so, provided that everything else is solid and the engine is in good condition, £6k would be a price I'd be happy to pay.

To be honest, if it's really solid underneath, I probably wouldn't argue too much about the extra few hundred quid, either.
