Over the past 2 years I have completely stripped down my defender and rebuilt it. This weekend was the time to turn her over. However it didn't not run. During the rebuild I replaced the timing belt.

Steps ive taken:

  • Primed the fuel system with bleed screw open on fuel filter
  • Cracked of injectors till signs of diesel and tightened
  • Checked the stop solenoid has 12v
  • Double checked timing and all is correct and aligned
Could someone now recommend the next steps for diagnosis? The engine cranks over but does not fire up.

Worth removing the stop solenoid, take out the plunger and spring and refit the body. If it starts now you need a new solenoid, you will also need to stall stop it

You can hear the stop solenoid click when you turn ignition on. Also I have diesel out of the pipes by the injectors to which when I cracked the injector pipe nuts diesel spat out.

Sounds fairly ok then, I once had a case of a bad stop solenoid on a friends car, opened enough to allow a small amount of fuel through so it would weep from the injector union but not enough flow to allow it to start.

I've just changed the stop solenoid for a new one and still no luck. There's 12v to it on position 2 of ignition but on crank it goes down to 8.5v. Would this cause an issue and make the pin drop back into original position?
