My 1994 300TDI Discovery has developed a water leak at the joint between the engine block and the alloy casting which houses water pump and mounts alternator. I have been supplied with a replacement gasket manufactured from thin steel with a pressed ridge around water aperture which I assume gives a watertight seal when compressed.

I would welcome the views of the experts on this forum as to whether sealant is also required with this type of gasket to ensure a watertight seal?

Hi

Common fault called the "P Gasket" (titter,titter). Make sure you do it right clean surfaces, blue engine sealer both sides of gasket, otherwise you will have to do it again:mad:

you shouldn't need any extra sealant with the P gasket but it wouldn't go amiss. More import that you make sure you clean both surfaces before re-build.

I did it last year without sealant and the bloody thing starting leaking again with in a week:mad: , did it again with sealant and it's been fine ever since!

Moral of the story: Sealant:)
 
I have changed mine twice, once from the original paper gasket and once after the fancy metal/plastic gasket started leaking. And then it started leaking again on a long trip, but I decided to ignore it as it cannot 'blow out' as used to happen with the paper gaskets with disastrous results for the engine and your pocket. And I looked the other day and it has now stopped leaking :D
