300tdi annoying noise

Hello , I hope someone can help with a minor although annoying noise from it appears front drivers corner of my D1. Only becomes apparent between 58- 60 mph checked by GPS which is unfortunately my cruising speed for my daily commute to work, if I increase speed to over 65 it disappears . Its a coarse resonating noise with an oscillation i,e,hole in exhaust or a panel vibrating , if I back off acceleration its less.This you appreciate can be an expensive trial and error job,

Check list to date ...

Wheel bearings seem good.
Front wings are good and secure
New exhaust system. no leaks
No holes in bulkhead or body. all grommets good
Replaced exhaust manifold gasket.
New prop shaft front and rear and rubber UJ as they had slight bit of play anyway.

Next step is swap tyres maybe.
Don't think its a bearing as it only appears at 58 mph ???
Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks .

I would have said prop shaft uj but if you checked all them things, could it be a wheel balancing problem?

I didnt describe that noise too well did I , and just to help , sounds bit like as I had an off road knobbly tyre on the front drivers side with the rumble and oscillation but only at 58 ish mph. Have checked all body panels and they are tight .
THE cv joint does not knock on tight cornering but suppose could still be bearing in there !
Will swap tyres tomorrow.
What ****es me off is its one of the sweetest disco ever had except for this.

What tyres have you got on? I have some muds there is plenty of noise from them but there is a vibration all through the body at 55. If I get to 65 it all stops apart from tyre noise.

Pure road tyres. 205x70x16 Swapping them for another set will be next test.

Check the disc guard(s) .. ****ty, rusty piece of cheap metal scrap that's supposed to stop stones and stuff from getting to and damaging the discs. One of the joints is a simple bent metal push-fit which can come loose and give this kind of noise.

I removed all mine ... They can also trap small pebbles so they also make the sounds, but also gouge the disc away ..

Been checking things over and front disc guards were loose on their brackets so tightened them. swapped tyres around also. Unfortunately its still making that noise .My wife says she does not hear it ! and a keen car type friend says its just typical 4x4 rumble as apposed to a refined modern car. Maybe I am expecting too much perfection from a '95 four wheel drive .
Noticed also noise rumble is more noticeable on hill inclines at 60 mph while on a down hill it disappears almost. Maybe next I will remove rear prop and then test drive it even despite the fact its a new prop. Further suggestions like gearbox clutch axles is getting very involved and could not justify the work involved vs the noise . If anyone has easier suggestions i would be grateful . Thanks

Exactly when you're putting more torque through the driveline...

I have a similar noise on my Disco 2 running Toyo Open Country all terrain tyres. Their humming seems to be audible to me at about 40 mph upwards, but I get the kind of noise etc. you describe, but seems to be from the rear on mine...

Strange, complex beasties sometimes...

You say you have done the rear propshaft.... what about the front??

I had this and it was a dry uj on the front prop.

Just a fitted new front prop recently . Thanks anyway . Noticed very slightest rocking between 12 and 6 o clock when tested front wheel bearing again could be it ! . Will replace it this week. May be a combination of wear on few parts i,e. wheel balance, bearings etc Could the slightest end float in a wheel bearing make a whirring noise at 60 mph combined with wheel balance maybe ?
