Had to drive her-in-door's 300 TDI (1995) and it appears to have a stutter/flat spot at 3000rpm. In first and second you can drive thru it but any gear above this it runs out of power, change up and it pulls well again until it reaches 3000rpm.
Its not a huge drama as you can still cruise happily but when an overtaking chance is presented it gets a bit scary as if a govenor cuts in???

Any ideas...

Engine is standard with egr still connected and still with a cat fitted?
Its well serviced showing 140'000 miles..

Hi, my 300 defender was doing that, only had it for 3 weeks, felt like there was no power, had to change gears all the time etc Then it stopped!!! It would only go 50 yds and cut out, it turned out to be the fuel pump, it was full of grass! New fuel pump and it is like a different Landy:) It goes!

Had it 3 weeks used it for work twice and broke down both times !

Chances are it's the fuel pump. Tdi's work quite well even if the pump is stuffed, we normally find that the engine won't start after changing the diesel filter as the old pump cannot prime the system.

But I would blank off the EGR and remove the cat as well, it doesn't cost much to have it done and can make a great difference.

Mine give up the day after the fuel filter was changed, must have pushed it over the edge! (and me)

I had identical problems on my old disco it was the fuel pump got a recon one fitted about £325 fitted, it flew also got lift pump filters etc done, then transfer box went titz up!!!!, have you tried the filter first? it would really needchanging if ur gonna do the inj pump and may fix it.

Don't remove the cat, and don't blank off the EGR. It's a waste of time and effort.

Change the lift pump, it will definitely make a difference if you have 140k on the clock.

Am I drunk (again) or am I reading that correctly:confused:

Blanking off the EGR valve is the first thing any body should do on any vehicle where it's fitted, nothing but problems otherwise!!

And I'm sure there are about 1265 people that will back me up on that on this site alone!

Interesting, I guess I'm the minority. I have three friends with EGR and Cat intact, and me with an old Disco with no problems. Wierd huh?

It's only when the things get all gunged up that the problems start!

I used to have a V6 tdi with a sticking EGR, it would stick open at the most embarrassing moments like in the centre of La Rochelle or out side school, the ecu would go tit's up, over fuel and make the most dense white smoke that you have ever seen in your life:eek:

If yours is a 200tdi you wont have one as they only started putting on from 1995 onwards.

Yet another quality post by frogfart.

Seriously, Unless you have anything sensible to post (instead of flaming probably the number 1 thing to do to your disco if its fitted with EGR) why not hold back and let people who no what there doing offer advice to someone thats having problems.

Oh i forgot, you dont like advice.

Go troll somewhere else.

I had my EGR blanked last week, the garage that did it had a disco there that was being worked on and the pipe was off. The guy showed me the mess it causes, it was like a thick layer of chewing gum has started building up around the inlet. Im glad I had mine blanked, it looked like that could have been a problem in the future.

yer when i did mine, the inlet was gunged up severely, when i get chance im going to strip it all down and give it a proper clean, i hate to think how far that black gunk can go!

Another thing i found was the actual EGR valve hardly moved from its open position, another indicator of why i had crappy throttle response!
