Thinkng of buying this if I can get it at right price. Series 2 with 200Tdi fitted. this was a project started years ago then left.
The engine is fitted to gear box, thats about it. There is no pedals, throttle, brake and clutch. also no Radiator or pipes ect. No wiring harness, exhaust or steering box yet.
Just thinking of what Parts I will need to get it up and running. and how hard of a job it is ??
Any Thought s would be appreciated. Thanks

How are you spannering skills ?

And the state of the wallet ?

All have a bearing on the outcome and how long it'll take, if you work full time and have a dry storage for the vehicle it may take a year to fix up, a complete nut and bolt restoration about four years, but then it becomes a rolling service thing ...

Have a search on peeps machines, many have done 'projects' ...

Not to bad , I have done 2 rebuilds a 110, and Series 2a , 110 took me 2 and a half years and series 18 months or so, few hours most days and weekends. they should both be on here somwhere.
I can manage the axles and other things , Its just the engine side, in what things I have to change convert etc. Dont want end up with a Nightmare of a rebuild..

There's a few on here done it, common swap ... have a search around in the projects ...

Has it been left outside some time? If so the ports on that engine/turbo have been open to atmosphere and done no good. You know Land Rovers and axles and gearbox may be usable, however value is as @Dippypud says in the chassis.
Yes was stood outside for a while before it was bought , It has been started though. It is a mate of mine who owns it now, both axles have now been fully rebuilt with all brand new parts even shocks and springs. but the lad he got to do the work packed in so he wants rid. Just thinking if I can get it at a good price I might have a go.

Run a list of major bits, from the interior, to the bonnet exhaust, brakes etc. get a ball park figure and work out what you want to pay for it ...

Nowt difficult on the engine side, some fit the intercooler others dont.
Exhaust can be bought ready made from steve parker.
I used the std series rad and the top series hose was a straight fit, bottom hose was made up from two hoses.
Battery tray is the only thing that has to be modded to clear the injector pump, I fitted my battery under passenger seat.
Good engine, really suits the car, excellent mpg, pretty noisy in the car though!

Unfortunately Steve Parker has gone out of business.....

Wings bonnet and windscreen are there , thinking now will need the interior bits like heater and wipers etc, but will se whats what before I decide. It does have a Fairey Overdrive though

Braking system, servo/master/slave/pipes/cylinders/adjusters/handbrake clips cables/peddle box
Engine..fuel pipes/filter/lift pump/water trap/sender/rad/cooling pipes/heater
Power steering pipes/ oil cooler & pipes.
Exhaust/all cooling pipes/intercooler, rad
Loom/ sensors/ earth cables/ relays/ dash gauges/wipers/ignition/lights
Missing panels/paint/interior
Axles/drive train/ strip inspect, bearings /swivel seals/ball joints/track rods
Replace all fluids, brake/engine oil/diff/gear/tranny
Tyres
Then there's your time...

Thats just off the top of my head, the last time I bought a project like this.. I spent over 4k on parts/painting not including buying it which was 2.5k as it had galvi chassis plus 300 quid delivery. I got it back here then I laid out all the parts I got with it on the
drive & binned just about everything I got with it n bought all new parts. Oh btw it was lovely & I done nowt to it for 4 years
then a mate pestered me for it so I sold it like a right mug. It took me 8 months to get it on the road I spent almost every weekend & countless nights.

Was it worth it hell yer.:cool:

Cracking job you done on that Mate. Yes think there will be a few more parts to source, so need to think how much I want to pay for it. Anyone an Idea of what it's worth as it stands Now ?

Cheers pal, I really enjoyed doing that one. Id say around 1500 as above for it. Ive been offered a series 2 for 1500
just waiting on some pics. Not sure if I need another project ive got a few on the go lol.

It would be decent project if the engine was sound and all the bits were there. Really nice bloke that owns it at the moment so dont want to offend him with low offer.

No point in paying more cause he's a nice bloke. You need to gauge what its costing to restore it. Can you buy one thats
complete & on the road between buying this then throwing ££ at it for the same amount with all the hassle.
The name of the game is get it cheap. Whats a new chassis 2k plus labour to fit. Theres your price. :)

As it stands, £200-500 really, but nobody is likely to accept that. The chassis and engine are worth money on their own, but obviously require work to get into individual bits. As a rule, parts will often add up to more than an entire vehicle.

A 200Tdi swap is not a bad swap as far as engine conversions go, but from the pics, this does look like lots of bits are missing.

Do you really want a project? And do you want a modified Series?

To get it running is one thing, but to get it being worthwhile to drive it, might be quite a different thing.

You'll want to clock the turbo. Steve Parkers was also the place for the downpipe you need, but no idea if you'll get one now they are gone, full exhaust.

Series rad and front panel will be fine, as long as you don't plan on being silly with tuning the Tdi, it'll run fine without the intercooler, although it would be possible to fit one.

Defender throttle pedal needed and the Tdi throttle cable, then Series for the brake and clutch pedal.

You'll want to check how the engine has been fitted to the gearbox (assuming it is a Series 4 speed?). There is a wrong way and a correct way. The wrong way will likely result in oil leaks.

You'll have to decide what you want to do about the power steering pump, if you want to run a standard belt setup. I fitted power steering to mine. Series steering can be fine, but is dreadful when the bits are worn. Replacing all of the steering parts is more costly than fitting a power steering setup. It looks like most are missing in the photos you posted.

You'll want to sort the suspension and brakes out, might as well do springs too if you are this far into it. Then its body and interior.

With the right parts and enough work, this could be made nice. But I suspect you are talking about thousands in parts. I already had a running working Series when I did a chassis swap and Tdi upgrade, plus PAS and suspension upgrades. So I was starting from a point of knowing what worked and with a fairly tidy vehicle interior/body wise.

I know prices have gone crazy on Series motors in recent times, but I'd have though you could easily spend more on this than it is realistically worth. Or at least you could buy a decent tidy runner for a less money and use it straight away.
