I have been offered a 94 L reg Disco & just wondering would this be a 200tdi or 300tdi ? I have not seen the vehicle yet but have been told that it is tax"d & mot"d till Jan 2011 & the seller wants £500.
I scrapped my P reg 300tdi the end of last year due to the work it needed to pass it"s MOT & have missed it ever since.
I am wondering if a £500 vehicle is going to be any good ?

why not have alook at it?

if he charged ya £1000 would you be happier thinking your getting a better motor:rolleyes:

if youve scrapped one you know what to look for.

i just bought a disco l reg 300 tdi mot till jan 2011 was rotton as a peach but i got it for the engine £400 i paid for it

Going to have a look at it in the week.
Just had some more info on it, 140,000 miles, manual, 5 door, tax & mot till 31/1/2011, 1 sunroof (so only one to leak), present owner has had it for 12 months & reckons it only needed welding on the inner wings for it"s last mot.
Only reason he"s selling it is because he has bought a Kia Sportage WTF !

Am I right in thinking that the 200 has a chain driven cam & the 300 a belt driven one ? Is the BHP the same on both ? Finally what is the towing capacity ?
Thanks in advance.

Ok guys after looking through some old posts I think I have found the info I need. Thanks for the advice & I will post what she is like when I see her later in the week. Just hope she has a boot floor as the last 2 I bought didn"t (plus loads of other rot) even though they were both bought with new MOT"s ! I wiil be ripping the boot carpet out of this one to look. Both the previous Disco"s I had never had any mechanical faults but masses of rust that weren"t easily spotted (not by the MOT testers anyway) & as I can"t weld were scrapped because of it.
I have a better idea where & what to look for this time round !

I have had a K reg & P reg before & both had to be srapped due to masses of rust. They both had brand new MOT"S but didn"t just fall to bits the 12 months I had them. they must have been very rusty when the MOT"s were done ! How they passed the MOT"s I do not know. They both needed boot floors, sills, inner wings, outriggers, rear inner arches, x members etc. I lost a lot of money on both & it put me off but I suppose I have been bitten by the bug as I am considering another ?
Mechanically & body work wise they were both very good. Mechanical repairs I can do myself but I have never welded in my life & the cost to have them welded was more than the vehicles were worth.
This vehicle seems a bargain price (might be a dog though as I haven"t seen it yet) so hopefully won"t lose money this time. I suppos now would be a good time to learn to weld !

Update.

Went to see the Disco this morning !
Where do I start. The body & interior are in good nick for a 16 year old motor & it drives well. Not smokey, noisy or clunky. Hi/Lo & diff lock work.
Rust wise ah now here"s the problem. Boot floor rusted away, rear cross member rusted through, both out riggers rusted through, both rear arch tops (when you open the rear doors rusted through, both sills rusted through, drivers footwell rusted through. I stopped looking at this point !
When I asked the seller how it had passed an MOT 6 months ago he said that none of the rust was an Mot fail as none of it was structural !
He want"s £500 (no offers). I know I could break it & probably make money but I have nowhere to do that (the wife certainly wouldn"t let me do it on the drive).
Do I walk away or buy it & over the next 6 months learn to weld & do the repairs bit by bit before the next MOT ? I suppose with the repairs done it might be worth £1,000.

thats a lot of work especially for someone learning to weld. If you have the time and space give it a go but for that money I would walk away and find a better one for a few £££s more.

I wasn"t actually looking for another Disco it was just that a friend rang me up & said he knew someone that was selling one cheap & would I be interested. I enjoyed my previous Disco"s (up to MOT time) & thought £500, 6 months tax & MOT mmm ?
I would be interested to know how these vehicles get MOT"S in this state as when I tried to MOT both of my previous ones the testers pulled them to bits !

theres good testers and dodgy testers everywhere. because they are only covered for 30 days from the day of the test you could sell a car with 11 months test and no comeback on the station

Unfortunately now I have driven a Disco again (first time in 10 months) I want another !
It"s either buy a half tidy one for maybe £2,000 or a dog for £500 & do it up myself. I wish I had learned to weld years ago !

theres plenty around its just a waiting game (hard I know ;) ) depending on what you want there have been a few on here for around £1000 - £1500 with all the welding work done.

If you consider how much it would cost you to sort all the work (parts, welding set, consumables etc.) it may be worth finding one that has already been done even though there is something satisfying about doing it all yourself.

whichever way you go there are plenty of good folk on here who can help you on your way :)
