It’s a “standard” military oil used in their defenders. I have 25l stored away sealed, and 20l stored away open.

Edit: I didn’t read the 10-30 bit. I normally use Halfords semi-synth 10-40, so will stick to that.

That is what I do. Use what it says in the manual, and stay with it.
If it isn't giving you a problem, why change.

No it isn’t giving me any problems (although I have probably just jinxed it), but it’s due a service. I wondered if the OMD90 would be suitable, as it’s free (I know the Halfords oil isn’t dear).

Really no idea, I am afraid. Never met it in real life, or heard of it until you posted about it.
There are some ex military bods on the forum, one of them might know about it.

Im not sure either. Thinking logically, it’s the same stuff we used in the military, so it’s got to be ok as it was recommended by LR for our engines. Also logically thinking, the Halfords stuff is cheap enough, and good enough, so why change to save a few £?

What sort of engines did the Military Land Rovers you drove have?

If they used that oil without problems, I don't see why it wouldn't work with civilian models.
You could always give it a try, and if you don't like it, just change it again and treat it as a flush.
If you aren't paying for the oil, it only costs you a filter.

I’m worried that it has a detergent in it, Oil Mineral Detergent (OMD), it may cause rattles or knocks. My engine has done around 180K miles, doesn’t really smoke (tweaked pump so it produces a small amount of black smoke), doesn’t really use any oil, and doesn’t use water. So it’s in reasonable condition for its age. I don’t want to **** that up for the sake of saving a few £.

I thought that maybe someone on here might have swapped oils over and not had a problem, so would say “I have done it, and it’s ok”. That may have given me something to think about.

All diesel oils have Detergent in them. Main difference between oil for petrols and diesels. More detergent in the diesel oil.

That’s got me thinking now. I may do what you said and stick some in for a few hundred miles. If it doesn’t change anything, do a second change and leave it.
 
I have been googling, and it is as clear as mud, some of the test data goes back to 1976 and 1984, quite a bit mentions detroit diesels, which is strange as I thought they ran on straight grade oils, they are two strokes so am assuming the yanks were involved in this testing?
Safest bet would be to flog it on ebay, and let someone else be the test bed, or use it up in lawnmowers etc.
