200tdi knocking

Got my 200tdi running and driving today, I'm loving it. Only thing is, it sounds a bit knocky and i was wondering whether this was normal for these engines? Hopefully you can hear it on the video

I don't know, is there a bit of adjustment on the pump timing i can play about with?

pump pulley has 3 slotted holes

Well i set up the timing 2 days ago, it's possible i got it wrong i suppose?

Does it always tickover that fast?
Its actually quite easy to get the timing out.

Yeah, I can't seem to get it to tick over all that slowly or it stalls

Although the knocking is not present on it's current tick over setting, just when I rev it up a bit

That's definetly not normal! Need to turn the idle wayyyy down aswel! If it's stalling when you turn the idle down that you've got further problems, might also be related to the knocking?
What have you done just fitted the engine or rebuilt or any further info might help source the problem?

I'd whip the front cover off and check the timing (especially the camshaft), if the cam is a tooth out that wont help you trying to get a smooth lower tick over. I assume this is also the same FIP that you've just had the revving its nuts off issues with, could also be further issues inside it?

The timing belt has been done, but i know the cam and crank are properly timed.... i tried re-timing the fuel injection pump today and it helped a bit...
The top end has been rebuilt in the passed week because of a blown head gasket.

That's what i'm guessing, also having some issues with smoke at the mo

The engine speed you heard in the video is not actually idle, i was just revving it up to get the knocking noise in as much as possible

If you adjusted pump timing and it helped, you are out on your timing and most likely you have set the belt so it cannot be advanced/retarded one way or the other.
Literally 10 mins checking will confirm/deny this.

I havnt watched the video however my guess would be to check the valve clearances to make sure they are also correct. When I did my 200 conversion it would run but start very poorly and that was due to the valve clearances

Valve clearances i believe are spot on, they were set up a few days ago, also this engine actually starts fabulously, even without glows on cold start, it starts almost instantly.

So, your suggesting i got the FIP pulley a tooth out? All is possible

No it may not be that far out, maybe a half a tooth and not actually out just out of adjustment, but if you havent got the bolts in the middle of the slots when you tensioned the belt you cant adjust the timing enough on the slots to get the timing spot on.

I did the exact same thing on my 200 into s2 conversion, bloody white smoke meant retarded timing and as I had no adjustment left it meant strip down again to get it right, not the end of the world but a lot more time consuming on a series than a defender.

You only have to remove the little round plate to get access to timing hole on the inj pump.
