Hi guys

I have had a 90 200 tdi for a couple of months, not using it regularly yet, as have a lot to do to it, and the weather has been crap.

Making a start in earnest this weeknd.

The Temp gauge has not worked since I picked it up, I have driven 500 miles total since I have had it, and it runs just fine.

What should I be looking for? Any checks I can make? If it is the sender unit how will I identify it? I have looked on Paddocks but cant see the right part?

Help appreciated.

Johnny.

Dae ye see the blue thing on the right of the photie, that's the wire that plugs into yer sender...

Check yer connector first to see if it just needs a clean or renewed first;)

thanks guys, will check today.

As far as I know the enging is the original, but I am not 100%. Is there any obvious way to tell if it is original or has been changed to a Disco engine?

Check you have supply voltage to the +ve terminals on the back of the gauge with the ignition on. If not it could be a fuse but I'd expect this to affect more than one gauge.

If you have voltage with the ignition on then

Take the wire off the sender and hold it to the engine block with the ignition on.
Does the gauge move? If so its your sender, if not it could be wiring or the gauge itself.

To check the gauge you need to ground the terminal that has the wire from the sender on it. Same deal, if the gauge moves its your wiring from the sender, if it dont and you have voltage on the +ve terminal the gauge is fubar.

Be careful and dont set fire to anything while you're poking around grounding the various terminals. DONT ground the main supply terminal though or you'll take out the fuse or worse. If you have a multi test meter then this is by far the safest option when looking for electrical faults.

Easiest and quickest way to tell if it's A Defender or a Disco engine is the position of the turbo.
The Defenders is sat near/at the top of the engine, where as the Disco's is low down at about the same level as the starter motor.
