Thats good advice, I didnt know the disco had a remote breather.

Is that a myford further up, I have a super 7 lying about my shop.

Disco has about 4 breather pipes, 1 on each axle, 1 on the gearbox and another on the transfer case (handy when you cut one like i did :D )

i've no idea what that lathe is, i've never looked for any makers name, it's old, rough (very worn) and i have very little idea of how to use it (although i've used it to rebuild and make new stainless shafts for Jabsco marine pumps) it mostly gets used to make my own spacers and similar simple jobs, anything a little more intricate/accurate i generally farm out to someone who knows what he's doing, although i am lucky in that i have ready access to the use of a decent lathe and a bridgport miller (i just wish i had more idea of how to use them)

Most I know with a lathe will say the same, you do know how to use it, it did what you wanted.
You have experience of marine fitting then, I've been messing with boats for years.

not too much experience of boats thank god :hysterically_laughi

my dad had a mid thirties mahogany over oak twin engined 36foot cruiser, it started life with a pair of morris navigators and crash boxes, we fitted a pair of perkins 4.108s and marine slush boxes ...

i hated that boat, it was like the Forth Bridge you'd start work at the bows and by the time you were at the stern you needed to go straight back to the bows, i was forever cutting out rotting boards and replacing or lifting the engines out and repairing/rebuilding them, i think i rebuilt the whole wheelhouse over 2 winters, most repairs/maintenance were done using mostly basic tools and an 800watt (peak) generator ....

the worst thing about it was most major repairs were done in mid-winter and the boat was 140-150 miles from home so it meant a week away in crap conditions and no hope of any proper warmth/comfort after the days work.....

boats are only for masochists and folks that live on the coast :p

i eventually had to tell my dad that i never wanted to see it again

It needs a certain type of person, not many would have a knacked out landy on the drive and pour money at it.
I had a sea boat with 2 perkys, and they were 4108's, they ran for 3 years with only services and a pump, spose it depends on the type of bucket you have.
I never liked wood boats maintenance wise, total pain to look after, I like steel and grp.

thta looks grand one question where is the viscous fan for the radiator ?? I am interested to do this as I have a disco 200 and wanna buy a series 3 galvanised chassis and do this etc and be road tax free!!!

you'll notice with a little reading that the tdi fitted Series all lose the viscous fan (and most lose the threads off the water pump) and most get fitted with an electric fan (light driving and a very good rad and the electric fan is rarely required, i only switched mine on last year to test it still worked but a couple of weeks ago i had to use it when towing a touch over two tonnes up Hatton Hill), you might get away with retaining the viscous fan if you fit a tdi to a 109 that had a sixpot engine in it tho, but i think the engine would sit too low in relation to the radiator...

i think you best read a few of these conversion threads or go look for the glencoyne site where he describes his conversion in some detail

if thats a fookin l200 enjun never mind the head gasket check the crank pulley is runnin true if it wobbles change it and the retaining bolt for it as this is what causes the dredded bearing blitz it will eventualy come loose and write off the engine starting with the crankshaft main bearing piston shells legs then smash its way out of the block sideways ( it happened to my cousins)

Yeah, I had my crank pulley disintegrate on my L400 too. Didn't destroy anything, but a pain in the arse. Injector pump seals leak, easy job when the engine's out, less so with it in. The big issue is the heads. They crack between the valves and can not be machined due to the ceramic inserts. They're basically a 100k mile service item. Will crack if overheated too, eg when the crank pulley fails.

Nice engine when they work but seriously flawed. MPG probably not as good as a 200tdi either. My Delica did 25mpg. The mitsi auto box on the other hand is a joy and bullet proof.

i had a manual l200 doublecab with the 2.5tdi 5brg engine looked after and serviced right its a cracking engine but ferk me was it thirsty when towing
