2 or 2a?

first uns more n likely a 2

Second un a 2a with later S3 plastic grill or a 2 made to look like a 3

Only way to be sure though is check the chassis number

What makes you say that? (Not saying you're wrong, just interested in how you came to that conclusion)

Also... head lights moved to wings on the second one - although, doesn't really help decide between 2 and 2a as wither could have been upgraded

Its in the bulkhead brackets (to mount the windscreen).... On the second one even though its got series 3 grill the brackets are the give away.

The bulk head on both look like they're from a 2 with the round vent controls but they could have been changed

Like I said the only sure way to tell is the chassis number ;)

The first one I'd agree is likely a 2, But i think with the deep sills and separate wiper motors the second could be as well, although i don't know the changover dates.... 2a as opposed to s3 wings, & a series s3 grill.

First one is a II - the truck only has 1 fuse and this likely would not have been back-fitted that way. Second one I would call a II as well because of the scuttle controls - they're the screw-type and not lever-type on the IIA.

Didn;t get a good enough look at the green one in the field to venture an opinion.

May i refer you all to my previous post from the S2cforum...

All the people normally associate with one or the other acutally changed before or after the 2A launch. for example, the flat apron and chrome ring headlamps are typcially considered Series 2 features, but they carried over into 2A production and were not replaced until 1963/1964. Likewise, the side horn push, dash mounted indicator switch, twist knob vent controls and screwed on vent flap hinges all typically associated with the Series 2 actually dissappeared in 1960/1961 almost a year before the 2A was launched.

Relying on certain features is not reliable

sorry, should have made it clear earlier
the green one in the field is the same one, its just been moved!

some interesting replies. i'll see if I can find some numbers, tho the green one is doubtful as there aint much left of the front end of the chassis.

the green one is deffo a series 2

as for the blue one theres summot up with that reg reccy thats been done as that reg corelates to between 1959 and 1962 coz its 3 letters followed by 3 numbers wich is how mine is set out at 1961

thing is mine has the same front end in wings and grille ( updated to look like a series 3 ) but that one didnt get the bulkhead replaced like mine did

niel

can i ask where these are and are you considering another resto job here :D:D:D

the number on the green one will/ should be on the passengers side chassis leg inbound side about 6" forward of the arse end of the front spring hanger ;)

If you can find it then look at the chassis / vin number for the definative answer

If it has a letter on the end then its a 11A if not then its a 2.

Land rover had the idea to call them IIA B etc but gave up after the B which was the forward control.

The 6 cyls were actually a G suffix.

Not sure if the 2a saw was the introduction of the 2.25, as the first 2's shipped with the 2l engine for a few years.

cant give an exact location for obvious reasons unfortunately.
they belong to a bloke I've known for a long time, the blue one is his, fitted with a 2.2 bmc diesel, used for business purposes a long time ago.
the green one belonged to a relation of his for as long as I can remember, long since passed away and now in his possession, mothballed, and both fallen foul to the chavs. the green one was once mint, being used as a daily drive for the chap, in its rag top guise, and having moved them from their resting place for the last 20 years at the request of the new garage owner, decided to research them a bit more. (due to the other thread, cheers bump)
the blue one moved remarkable easy, all 4 wheels turned and the steering worked, the green one was a different story. everything was seized and was pretty much dragged to where it sits in the last pic. wrenched the heart strings doing it, and would be a hell of a resto project. reckon the green one would be more original, but theres more hope for the blue one. don't currently know their fate, suspect they will sit there till doomsday.

Your right ....................... BUT

Mine has a series II chassis number rolled off the production line 6th January 1961 has a 2.25 engine and IIA bulkhead.

Wasn't registered as far as I know till 1963 ;)

There are some oddities out there :D :D :D

If they're ex military dont they get registered when they leave the mod or something like that? Like a series 2 built in 1963 was registered in 72 or am I just completely off track?

Yes but you can apply for an age related plate so unless you know if thats been done it doesnt help much
