Every day is a learning day. Makes sense!

I bet Data is already out there with his scope!

lol, indeed I had to watch a good few videos as I also thought , nah , how the hell

but then as I watched more I think I started to get the understanding of it , how the oscilloscopes read the starter motors amperage draw as each cylinder got to it TDC

I think that’s about right ,famous last words, lol

That sort of electrickery is way above my pay grade.

All the newer trucks pretty much run on pwm signals, so that is the next thing we have to learn, sorry I meant avoid!
I am getting to the age where quite frankly I could not give a toss about the newer stuff, it is interesting but mind boggling at the same time.
PWM in itself is pretty simple, it's the interconnection of critical and non critical systems on a common data bus that I think is crazy. I will not touch any of the new stuff.

Im no expert, trucks are way easier than cars, cars a nightmare, you wont find many hgv mechs doing private work at the weekends, mention working on a car, and the majority of them will start walking backwards!
My son would agree with that, but he also got completely hacked off with Volvo bus electronics to the extent that he now drive trucks for a living

Worn starter motor bearings, worn brushes or commutator, high resistance connections, there are too many variables for it to be reliable IMO.

We have a few ex volvo techs, they dont say much about their old jobs!

last night I had a Scania five cylinder in for a cruise control fault so thought well I have the diagnostic computer out I would carry out a cylinder compression test and a cylinder shutdown test
The cylinder shutdown test consisted of leaving the engine idling, the

test was the computer shutdown one cylinder at a time and stuck up a graph to compare the values
The compression test basically consisted of the computer turning the engine over and also producing a graph, It did this twice to make sure the results were consistent
Basically it was really boring and whilst it was doing a test I was reading a boating magazine!
