My alloy inlet was pretty clean when I took that off just oil pushed through from turbo over years. From what I could see from the top of the valves they looked decent.
I’m in no way going to put water in my chambers. It’s getting mixed up with the original conversation.
‘95 push rod engine is old to me? It is running a lot better with just basic maintenance and getting crap out from when I first took ownership.

You don't have EGR so the inlet side should be pretty clean. By the way it is not a push rod engine, it has a very nice overhead camshaft.
