Hi, I am starting to fit a 2.5 n/a diesel into my Series 2A. The old petrol is Very tired. Having seen a few posts from the past, some people say to use the Series pressure plate, however this is different to the 2.5 n/a flywheel, i.e. it won't fit because of the 3 locating dowels on the flywheel. There are only 2 on the series pressure plate. Presumably I can use the 2.5 pressure plate with the 9.5 inch drive plate from a series (so the splines on the input shaft fit) ?
Also, I have read that the offside engine mount needs cutting off and a new one fitting as the original will foul the injection pump on the 2.5. Are there any off the shelf mounts that I can buy and weld on to fit the engine nicely ?
Thank you in anticipation of any answers.:blabla::)

Thanks for the reply. I presume I cannot use the 2.5 pressure plate then ?
I will call Steve Parkers tomorrow. Thank You.

If you want, I'll take a photo of the engine mounts on mine whilst the engine is out the way.

The conversion on mine was done by granddad a couple of years ago

Thank you Redhand. The advise is greatly appreciated.
Samc88, it would be great if you could get some photo's to me, would appreciate it.
Thank you both, very kind.

Heres a few pictures I've got of the engine bay, they aren't the best but they're the only ones I've got with the engine in situ on the vehicle

I'll take some of the chassis tomorrow for you :) Any other pictures you want whilst everythings dismantled at the minute?

Thanks for the pictures. Can't think of any others I need, maybe just some close up's of the offside mount and bracket on the chassis would be good, thank you.
Hi jamesmartin, I have got a 9.5" driven plate but wasn't sure if I had to use the Series 2 pressure plate/cover (which would mean cutting the dowels off) or wether the standard 2.5 n/a pressure plate would do the job.
The 2.5 n/a pressure plate has multiple fingers on it, whereas the one from the series 2 petrol engine just has 2 arms on it. I wasn't sure if the clutch release bearing would work on both types ? I've already fitted the 9.5" driven plate and the multi-fingered 2.5 pressure plate, but can change them if need be, not a problem. I'd rather get the job done right. Many Thanks.

ok we best get things in the correct order BEFORE you go buying anything ...

first we BELIEVE you have a 2a landrover but DO you have a 2a gearbox??

the reason i ask this is because some folks swap to the later S3 gearbox which has a different clutch release mechanism

following this the 2a and S3 have different pressure plates, so we need to know what you already have (9.5" clutch is not the answer we need :p )

S3 clutch slave cylinder is under the passenger footwell, 2/2a clutch release is under the drivers footwell so it's easy to determine which gearbox you have

then and ONLY then can your pressure plate requirements be decided on

you can only use a Series friction plate as it has fewer (bigger) splines than the later landrovers, all 2.25 litre Series "2-2a-3" can use the same 9.5" friction plate unless of course it is fitted with the early 9" kit (three prong pressure plate in the very early vehicles, this can of course be swapped for a 9.5" kit)

i hope this helps
Pete

Hi Nitemare, thanks for jumping onboard. The clutch release arm and slave cylinder are definately on the drivers side. The pressure plate that came off the 2.25 petrol has 3 arms on it where the clutch release bearing sits. The pressure pate from the 2.5 diesel has multiple arms/fingers on it. Obviously the one from the 2.5 engine fits with the 9.5" driven plate (which I have already bought to fit the Series 2A gearbox splines) but to fit the 3 armed pressure plate to the 2.5 engine, I would need to cut off the 3 dowels. Many Thanks. James

you're welcome as i had to learn about this when i swapped my engine to a tdi

now from your description your old friction plate and pressure plate is the 9" one (don't throw the pressure plate away someone "may" make use of it) which obviously doesn't match the 9.5" friction plate that you have

i think the plate i used was an AP product, it looks very much like your 2.5 diesel plate with lots of little fingers but has a "boss" in the centre that your release bearing rides against (i've no idea how it's fitted in them)

you'll probably experience the same locating pin difficulty with this one as you had with the original 9" p/plate

do NOT attempt to use the 2.5litre pressure plate as without the previously mentioned boss you will damage the release mechanism "top hat" that presses against it (this is if it will actually even release the clutch) and i doubt you really want the grief of taking the box back out to change that and fit the correct p/plate

Thank you so much. I have ordered the pressure plate with the 'boss' in it and hopefully it won't be too long until I get it sorted. I believe I just need to cut the offside engine mount off and fabricate a new one to hold the 2.5 engine as it won't seem to fit on the standard mounts. Many many thanks.
