P38A 2.5 DSE smokes too much

Hi, no external powerbox. Don't know if the Ecu is chipped or mapped, should take it out and check. It starts fine both cold and hot. Didn't flush the intercooler but I've cleaned the filter of the rocker cover.
No cooling leaks at all.
The intercooler hoses have been checked during the service (new filters, fluids all around, new 4th injector, return pipes etc).
But she smokes and the smoke certainly looks like that of unburned fuel (if I floor the accelerator pedal response is great but I leave a nice black cloud behind for the joy of those who follow me:D )

There's a setting in the Nanocom sonewhere of 128 (default) that sometimes people increase to mask bad timing. I cannot remember which value though. Cannot remember if increasing that increases fuel across the board or just at idle. Data would remember.

Foot to the floor it will smoke a bit. If they've chipped it they may have gone a little further on the map so you get a little more smoke (but more power). Compression low would give more smoke - carbon build up on valves, that sort of thing. At the end of the day a high-roller 90s diesel is going to smoke a bit when you hammer it.
No sign of smoke on either of mine with the MAF connected.

The 128 you refer to is the idle speed setting, sometimes it is increased to stop stalling on lift off due the the modulation being way out. I would add that with the modulation over 80%,my project car was nigh on impossible to start when hot. With the modulation at 50% it starts immediately hot or cold.

Check RAVE for replacing crank-shaft. Note the 12 thou shim under the cam-shaft locking tool. My modulation is at 80% but the starter barely engages before it fires. Original chains. Timing of FIP as per RAVE with dial guage. Crankshaft as per RAVE with shim. Beru plugs. Platinum 642X battery. I did replace #4 injector a few years ago and it does have a new head, head gasket, valves etc but original tappets. I do still have the hotfix installed.

If the modulation was corrected you could bin the hot start bodge.
