Gidday,

my 2.5 dse has had an engine noise ever since i have owned it (2 and a half years). It's a scary rattle, but i just turn up the stereo and it goes away (if only it was that simple). I have done 40k, and the noise seems to be getting a little worse, although perhaps i'm just listening for it a little harder. The noise happens when driving, but it comes in at @2250 revs and seems to disappear at @ 2500 revs. It seems to be worse when it's cold, bu7t is always there. It's more evident under load, and if i sit there and rev the engine to 2500 while stationary the noise can not be heard. Any ideas what the noise could be? Anybody come across anything like this before?

Definately engine speed related (i.e happens at quoted RPM through every gear) not road speed related?

Make sure you rule out the obvious first...prop shaft UJ's and balancing, tyre balancing, suspension components.

If it's under load my gut reaction is to say Flywheel (DMF) and working back from there to the transmission... assuming of course it manual. Auto experts will offer equivalent component issues...

Could be the timing chain rattling...as it approaches a certain speed, it reaches the Natural Resonant Frequency causing it to vibrate...then when past that speed it settles down again....possibly...maybe...could be...who knows!!

A tinkling noise similar to pinking on a petrol engine, on a diesel under load is quite often a sign of a broken piston ring. But if your car has EGR try taking the vacuum pipe off the EGR diaphragm and see if it stops.

Sounds like some sort of sympathetic vibration from a component. I'd be looking at the crank pulley vibration damper, the catalytic convertor, loose heat shields etc.:)

My thoughts were perhaps the timing chain and tensioner guides, or maybe the fuel pump, but i was hoping it was a common fault and that someone was able to direct me straight to it. I suppose the best thing to do would be to run it up on a dyne, but i don't think we have one here in wellington, the capital city of NZ. if we did , it would not be suitable for a 4wd.

Ah, the old diesel vibes problem... the ALL seem to do it, to a greater or lesser degree... and nobody seems to have solved it yet...

Mine vibrates badly through the whole body, at idle and again between 1500-2000rpm... in all circumstances.

Mine has been doing the same iv had a new flex plate due to a different noise and symptoms that's if it's an auto ???? The rattle on mine turned out to be the heat shield above the front pipe under the driver seat area don't know why it would not do it stationary but that's what I found good luck.

That is what was rattling on mine.:)

Mine is more like a 'buzz' felt through the whole car... it IS coming from the engine (or something bolted to it!) because I can see and feel it vibrating...

Most definitely the British way, ingenious solutions to problems that shouldn't exist in the first place.

Could be an engine mount!

I will check out the heat shield on the exhaust ,hold my breath and hope that is all it is. Cheers.

I had nasty rattle which turned out to be o/s exhaust tailpipe rubbing on the spare wheel well. Its amazing how something so insignificant as that can vibrate through the entire car.
