P38A 2.5 diesel- want one but scared!

Cheers, will give them a bell, the local ‘Land Rover specialists’ have said it’s a head gasket problem without even looking at it. But they are the same company that knacked my freelander so haven’t got much faith in them.
Have they given it a " sniff test " to determine head gasket on its way out?? albeit i would tend to agree with them in my own experience in the past on cars showing same symptoms.

To busy to check it out apparently just told me to book it in for a HG change, so I have sent away for some gear to test it myself.
The bloke I first spoke to seems absolutely certain it’s the liners based on the fact pressure remains in the expansion tank after it has stood for two or three days.

Maybe they just don't want the job buddy so it's most likely best to try and determine yourself. It was my local AA chap who used his sniff test tool on one of my cars a few years back which showed the problem as an on its way out head gasket.

Done a sniff test (twice) liquid remains blue! Also the UV water/oil test, water cap lit up day glow orange dip stick and oil cap not a shimmer?
Going to send for a pressure tester but no supplier has got back to me to confirm that their kit will fit my 38?
 
+1. UV dye in coolant and then check dip-stick with UV torch off the Bay. If dipstick lights up then head-gasket. Not a bad job but with all the rusty bolts you will encounter it will take a weekend of slow methodical progress.
Done it, tried the water cap first(to make sure the kit was working ok) lit up day glow orange, oil cap and dipstick not a glimmer?

Give it a hundred miles or so then try again. Not that I want you to find a problem but just to be sure. If you see it in the oil then it must be getting across somehow. I think you said no hydrocarbons detected in the coolant? Sounds a bit like it might be OK and something else is causing it. @Henry_b might have an idea. Did you check the plugs?
 
Plugs are the next port of call..

If it isn't burning it then she's leaking it..

Liner issues dump coolant in to the sump and in most cases punches up through the headgasket too if you had such an issue it would be very apparent,

A pressure test is next IMO.

They can leak coolant from a variety of places,

1) split expansion tank
2) Front cover gasket
3) Waterpump
4) Valley gasket
5) Core plugs
6) Radiator
7) heater matrix

Is your carpet dry I wonder.... :eek::D

It appears your headgasket is ok then ( For now ) as Grrr suggested try it again after a good long run to be 100% sure albeit as you mentioned it is leaking from somewhere. If it were burning coolant i think you would be able to smell it too. Are you losing large amounts fast or just a small amount over a period of time?? the latter would suggest something very small. Check all your core plugs on the block for signs of weeping albeit i bet you have done all the visual stuff already buddy.
Its a mystery for sure but if you have NOT looked at the heater matrix core YET in detail then just for peace of mind i would swap it out for that new type Audi one ive read about on here where once fitted you never have O ring issues again. Its worth a punt i suppose same as water pump and valley gasket if your in that area but like the old saying, " if it aint broke " leave it alone. LOL.

The good news is that now the UV dye is in it should be easier to spot the leak if it is somewhere hot. Does yours have the leaking throttle body?

Gave it some welly and it’s bad news the dipstick is glowing orange but also seems to be a leak on the two pipes just behind the top of the radiator as there seems to be a fair bit of UV glowing there as well.
Redone sniff test that’s still negative.
 
I would talk to v8 developments before doing that. Only one way to be sure it is a liner. I thought all the dodgy ones had already dropped.
Meant to ask, I know dropped liners are one of the problems with the Thor but was their an average mileage when this problem developed?

Sorry but Haven’t had me hands greasy since my D2.
