2.5 Diesel lack of Power

Hi Guys – as well as my other thread on here about gearbox performance I am also compelled to ask about my P38 2.5 diesel auto (2000) incredible lack of power. I towed a discovery on a road trailer yesterday and could barely manage 50mph on a gradual incline on the motorway with my foot flat to the floor – she would then change down and maintain about 50. She even struggled a little with the empty trailer on the return journey. After this slogging I stopped in the garage and put some fuel in and started her she took twice the number of cranks to get going and stayed on idle even when I fully depressed the accelerator. She gradually picked up and I drove her home ‘normally’. Are these renown for a lack of power or do I have an isolated problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated ... regards Neil
 
Last changed the filter over a year ago but will change it now as well ... is there a filter in the tank ... my friend had an older model and said he took his out and put an inline filter in futher along the line ??

there is a fine gauze on the inlet to the lift pump in the fuel tank, that can also get clogged up, though it's a bastard of a job to do as you have to drop the fuel tank to get to it, or as we did in the end, cut an access hole in the floor under the rear seats. We have a '95 2.5 DSE.
 
It could possibly be the MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor).

Being a 2000 model you'll have the EGR & MAS Sensor. When this plays up it usually shows up as lack of power/pull. I had this on my 1999 2.5 DSE and bought a cheap Ebay replacement which proved no good. I ended up buying a genuine replacement part from Paul at airmassmeters.com www.airmassmeters.com for £164.98 inc pp & vat.

To test if it is faulty - unplug it. The ecu will default to set values and the car will pull better, but will need a new one fitting.

Hey wallingford, my old place of residence!!

to add to this, check the pipe from turbo to boost sensor, found them split and gummed up wth sticky oil residue, boost sensor also helps if you clen the inlet to it, if the engine dont know how much boost it needs it wont get it!!

on the maf, these often do not show a fault code as they can be duff or only partially working,when partially working it wont show a code!
 
Pipe from the inlet manifold to the MAP sensor split is another possibility.

Also boost isn't controlled (it is not a variable boost turbo - just limited to 15psi or something!), so it is not a case of how much boost the engine needs, but how much fuel is needed due to boost pressure (I think)
