2.5 D Rear Propshaft

Rear propshaft came off spectacularly yesterday on the road . Have ordered front and rear replacements from Emmotts + bolts. Any advice I need on re-fitting ?
(Autobox sump took a thump in the process : replacing.)

Any warning was possibly ignored prop shafts don't just fall off.

My question still stands. And I am hoping this guy is not too embarassed to answer. Also I am interested to know how a rear prop shaft managed to clout the gearbox sump as its ahead of the transferbox. Spin??

I agree but still want the whole story. Had a Transit last week pull up outside with a u/j gone sounded like a pile driver!

Advice on fitting, get Emmotts to do it and the sump but just noticed you are near Edinburgh. Fitting is easy if you have a ramp, so you need access to one. There is a special tool available to tighten up the bolts as there is not much room but can be done. If buying second hand grease them before fitting and dont forget the sliders.

I'm not aware of any warning : I was aware of a minor steering wheel tremble but I had just renewed one tyre and had the camber checked....thought it might have been that.

I drive with sun roof open and window down a bit 'cos I'm a cigar smoker ! I think I would have heard any major rumbles. I AM getting on a bit and one ear not so good with the shooting but I don't think my hearing is a prob.
I also had the prop greaded when I got the tyre replaced a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks for your replies guys. I haven't been on in a long time partly because the ol' RR has been behaving very well this past year or so !

I'm doing my best ! There's not much I can say except it fell off !!
there may well have been symptoms but if there were they were not so noticeable to be a cause of concern. I've mentioned the slight steering wheel tremble...even now I doubt if that was anything to do with it.

It must have been spin : it took the bottom and side covers off the gearbox : they were lying in the middle of the road.

Wow - you are lucky it didn't end in a bad crash (supose it was!) - must have been a bit of a shock though and I hope you are over it. And a shame as the car has been behaving for a while. I was pushing (I hope you don't mind) because u/js don't normally just go! I have posted some U/Tube stuff which might help, I don't know if it is any help to you as you will be fitting replacements i.e. you or a garage? Hope your car is on the road soon. All our cars are getting old, bit like us - my ears suffer from shooting too. Any info on anything is welcome things do break: Example: I was demonstrating my Austin Seven Special to a prospective purchaser whilst at Uni (I was young then!!! 1960s) when the near side wheel just came off (no warning) and overtook us. The chap wasn't impressed but as I was looking at the car - (the purchaser long gone and after retrieving the wheel) this man came out from his house and said "I think I have a half shaft for one of those in my shed" - and he did (several) - I was driving in about an hour. Funny old world.

So to check them we are just looking for movement in the joint when you wobble them and giving them a bit of grease?

If there is ANY slight movement they need changing ASAP. A lot of movement change then immediately.

Definitely this weekend! Although I checked and greased them at the start of the summer. Best double-check!
